ASU Rowan Award

Angelo State University has handed out its second Colonel Rowan Award, recognizing a staff member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in carrying out a major project during the last academic year. It goes to Pat Payne, construction project coordinator for ASU's Office of Facilities Planning and Construction. Payne's diligence is credited with saving the school thousands of dollars in possible overpayments to contractors.


New ASU display

Angelo State University's West Texas Collection will debut a new display next Thursday. "Over There: American Involvement in the Great War" uses historical photographs, artifacts and memorabilia to offer a personal glimpse into the turbulent years when war was first fought on a global scale. The opening of the display on the second flor of the Houston Harte University Center will feature a legure by military historian Dr. Charles Endress.

Traffic advisory

A traffic advisory from TxDOT: because of construction, the intersection of Loop 306 and FM 765 starting is now a four-way stop. North and southbound traffic will be diverted off the main lanes of LP 306 to a detour on the west side of the loop before the intersection at FM 765. Traffic on FM 765 will cross the closed main lanes of LP 306 and come to a stop at the new detour. You'll be alerted to the changes by stop signs with flashing red lights and message boards. And please use extreme caution in the area.





Mall shooting

There was a shooting at Sunset Mall Monday night, just after closing. Police say a man from Abiline was at the mall, visiting his nephew, a vendor at the mall. He was reportedly showing a handgun he has just bought when it went off and struck his nephew in the foot. Elias Ceniceros was trasported to a hotspital. No charges are expected to be filed in a shooting that's been ruled accident.

Water update

San Angelo's water situation is looking better. According to City Councilman Paul Alexander's Facebook page, our last rainfall event, which was about a two-inch rain, ended up catching around 13-hundred Acre Feet of water in our area. That's around 20 days of water, which pushes the city's most restrictive drought contingency plan into early September and past the heat of summer.

Severe weather outreach

Starting today, an effort begins to help residents of the Concho Valley become better informed of Natoinal Weather Service weather warnings. Representatives of the San Angelo Amateur Radio Club, the City of San Angelo, Tom Green County and the National Weather Service will be on hand from one to four this afternoon at Home Depot. They'll be answering questions, helping to program weather radios and showing how to access critical information from Nixle.



Showdown reservations

The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce is giving you a chance to reserve premium seating at the 6th Annual Showdown in San Angelo Drag Races. A 10-foot by 10-foot spot along the Spring Creek bank of Lake Nasworthy will provide a front-row view of the races. Reservations cost 100 dollars each and will be taken starting Friday morning at 8:30.

Sonrisas fundraiser

A fundraiser for Sonrisas Therapeutic Riding is underway at Turtle Hole Car Wash at 2322 Sherwood Way. For every 10-dollar car wash sold, Turtle Hole will donate three dollars to Sonrisas. The fundraiser continues through March 11th.

School of the Victorian Lady

The 8th annual School of the Victorian Lady will be held at Fort Concho National Historic Landmark over the weekend of March 9th through the 11th. The classes will cover many aspects of female life in the 1800's, including sewing, quilting, cooking, cross-stitching, general fashion and manners. Registration for the entire weekend, including meals, is 35 dollars.

Forger sentenced

A Houston man who was arrested in San Angelo along with two other people last April for trying to cash two large counterfeit cashier's checks has been sentenced. 47-year-old Roy Thomas Sledge received the maximum punishment of 20 years in prison and a 10-thousand dollar fine.


SBDC seminar

The ASU Small Business Development Center is presenting a seminar entitled, “How to Lease Commercial Real Estate: For Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners” tomorrow night from 6 to 8:30. Lunch and Learn

The Concho Valley C.A.R.E.S. Coalition, will host its next Lunch and Learn on Wednesday, March 7th, from noon to one at River Crest Hospital on Hunters Glen Road in San Angelo. Officer Zach Upton, from the San Angelo Police Department's Community Services Division, will join the coalition to discuss What Every Parent Needs to Know about Inhalant Abuse. Symphony logo contest

The San Angelo Symphony is holding a contest to come up with a new logo to represent the organization. The symphony says it is looking for a design that's contemporary, bold and eye-catching that conveys passion and excitement and that, in some way, incorporates music. The winning logo get 100 dollars. You can submit a design by emaling it to assistant-at-san-angelo-symphony-dot org or dropping it off at the Symphony office in the Cactus Hotel.

Arts at ASU

Angelo State University's Arts at ASU program will present a compilation of student-written plays in the production "An Evening of Student Works." That will take place Thursday through Sunday this week and Thursday through Saturday next week in the ASU Modular Theatre in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building on Dena Drive. Tickets are three dollars for ASU students, four dollars for non-ASU students and eight dollars general admission.

Warrant roundup underway

The 5th Annual Great Texas Warrant Roundup is underway. On Saturday, law enforcement agencies and courts from more than 250 jurisdictions across the state began going after people with unpaid tickets or higher charge warrants. The goal of the roundup is to get them to take care of their responsibilities and avoid handcuffs and jail. Anyone with a traffic or parking ticket, city ordinance, penal code and any other higher charge warrant could be targeted.

San Angelo's most wanted

San Angelo`s Most Wanted this week is a fugitive sought for aggravated assault with serious bodily injury, assault with bodily injury to a family member and a probation violation out of Bexar County. 22-year-old Eddie Sanchez, Junior, is five-eight, 190 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. His last known addresses were in the 500 block of East 28th and in the 100 block of Maryland. If you have any information about Eddie Sanchez, Junior, contact CrimeStoppers at 658-HELP.

Schools Foundation fundraiser

On March 8th, a week from Thursday, the San Angelo Schools Foundation will host a fundraiser. Tthe first annual “Sip. Savor. Support Students” is an evening of wine tasting, art, music, and food. The event will be held in the Community Room on the 3rd floor of the Stephens Central Library from 6 to 8 pm. The event will help the Foundation as it provides teachers with classroom grants and students with scholarships for higher education.

Quick Books workshops

The Angelo State University - Small Business Development Center will be hosting two QuickBooks training workshops this week: Introduction to QuickBooks tomorrow and QuickBooks Basics on Thursday. Each session will be held in ASU's Rassman Building on Dena Drive from 4-6:30 p.m. Cost is 30 dollars per seminar, per person. ASU Police Training This Evening

If you're anywhere near the Angelo State University campus tonight, you'll see a large law enforcement presence in the area. More than likely, it's not a campus crisis but a police training exercise. Angelo State officials say the campus police force will be conducting a large-scale live training event, primarily on the east side of the campus, this evening. The school says signs saying "Police Training In Progress" will be prominently posted and that there should be no disruption to normal Friday evening events on the Angelo State campus.

High school basketball playoffs in full swing

In high school basketball it's a big one tonight for the Central Bobcats, who face Lubbock Coronado in Big Spring. Coronado is 17-11. Central is 30-5.

The Wall Hawks beat Eastland, 56-to-49 in a Class 2A area-round boys playoff game. This was revenge for the Hawks, who lost to Eastland each of the past two years in the playoffs. The next game for Wall is next Tuesday in the regional quarterfinals.

The Wall girls need two wins to get to the state tournement. They'll face Spearman at the regional tournament tonight at Midland College. If Wall would win, they'll play again tomorrow afternoon in the regional finals.

The Bronte Lady Longhorns are still iln the thick of it too. They're two wins away from state. They'll play #7 Strawn tonight from Moody Coliseum in Abilene. This is the Lady Longhorn's first appearance in the regional tournament in 17 years.




Texas school spending

The state of Texas is not a big spender when it comes to public schools. According to the National Education Association, the state spends less than nine-thousand dollars per student per year. That compares to the national average of more than 11-thousand dollars. Last year, Texas ranked 41st in the nation in student spending and the state has dropped this year to 45th in the country.


Hutchison at ASU

U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, speaking at Angelo State University, expressed her continuing support for Goodfellow Air Force Base. Hutchison also backs ASU's Center for Security Studies, which she helped fund and visited on Thursday afternoon. The ASU visit was one of several in Texas for Hutchison, who is retiring from the Senate.

Vehicle burglaries arrest

San Angelo Police have made an arrest in connection with recent burglaries of vehicles. They say 20-year-old Dylan Kohutek-Bottalico is linked to at least three burglaries. His arrest Thursday followed a vehicle stop last week in which police found property stolen from a vehicle at the Sunset Mall. That led to the recovery of more than 100 items, including iPods, iPads and stereo equipment, believed to be stolen from vehicles throughout the city. Also recovered were papers and information reported stolen from vehicles in Tom Green and Runnels counties.

ASU Choir concert

The Angelo State University Concert Chorale and Community Chorale will cap off February, the month of love, with a "Concert of Love Songs," next Tuesday. Thawill take place at the Cactus Hotel, on East Twohig Avenue in downtown San Angelo. The concert, featuring classical, opera and jazz, will begin at 7:30 PM and is open free to the public.

Discover ASU days

Angelo State University has scheduled two "Discover ASU" days for next month. Prospective students and their families will be welcomed on campus on Saturday, March 3rd, and on Saturday, March 31st, for a daylong program designed to help high school students learn about campus life and educational opportunities at the university. Flood maps

In four months, Tom Green County will have final flood maps that show the most current flood risks, giving homeowners, renters and business owners the information they need to make informed decisions. Local officials and FEMA expect the maps to become effective on June 19th. In the meantime, everyone is encouraged to review the maps now in order to determine their flood risks. For more information, you can contact your local floodplain administrator.



Boil water notice rescinded

The Coke County Water Supply Corporation has announced that the Boil Water Notice issued for the Edith Estates customers of Robert Lee last Friday has now been rescinded. That follows satisfactory completion of the bacteriological sample showing that the water is safe to drink.

Hutchison visit

U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison will be visiting Angelo State University this afternoon. Hutchison will be briefed and deliver remarks on ASU's new Center for Security Studies. The event is sponsored by ASU and the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce.

Trade Summit

The public is invited to the 3rd Annual West Texas Trade Summit today. It's designed to promote trade relations and transportation networking and provide for an understanding of issues of economic interest between Texas and Mexico. It gets underway this morning at the Stephens Central Library.

Red Flag Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for West Texas, including the Concho Valley, which is in effect until 6 o'clock tonight. West winds will reach 20 to 30 miles an hour with possible gusts over 40 miles an hour and humidity will be down to just 10 to 15 percent. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.




Rodeo continues

The 80th San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo continues tonight at the Coliseum with Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night, in honor of breast cancer awareness. The final three rodeo performances--tomorrow night, Saturday afternoon and Saturday night--are sold out.

Toastmasters open house

The Daybreakers Toastmaster Club is hosting an Open House for all past, present or future members. You can enjoy a complimentary breakfast while getting acquainted-or reacquainted-with San Angelo's only Toastmasters Club. The open house will be held Wednesday, March 7th starting at 6:45 A.M. at the Emmanual Episcopal Church located on South Randolph.

ASU teacher grant

An associate professor of teacher education at Angelo State University has been awarded a 90-thousand dollar Teacher Quality Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Donna Gee will use the money to extend her project aimed at improving elementary school mathematics education in West Texas.

Preventable hospitalizations

During the next 18 months, Tom Green County residents will be hearing and learning more about three preventable hospitalizations: bacterial pneumonia, urinary tract infections and chronic obtrusive pulmonary disease. From 2005-2009, adult county residents were charged more than 159-million dollars for hospital stays that could potentially have been avoided. County officials are teaming up with area medical facilities to educate the public about preventative outpatient care.

Grape Creek grant

U.S. Senator John Cornyn announced Wednesday that the Grape Creek Volunteer Fire Department will receive a grant from Homeland Security of more than 45-thousand dollars to support firefighters and their work as first responders. The funding will be used for training and support operations, and to purchase firefighter safety and rescue equipment.

Fire Weather Watch Tomorrow

If you're planning any open burning, this is definitely not the time to do it. The National Weather Service in San Angelo has issued a Fire Weather Watch for the Concho Valley that will be in effect most of the day tomorrow. That means that low humidity in the ten to fifteen percent range coupled with wind that's expected to be strong and unpredictable, with gusts up to 45 miles-per-hour, will create a significant fire hazard. Forecasters saying that no matter how careful you may be, any fire is liable to get out of control very easily. That Fire Weather Watch is in effect from noon to six tomorrow.

Colorado murder hearing

At a hearing Tuesday, a judge in Colorado found probable cause to try a San Angelo man for murder. Frederick Harold Mueller is accused of killing his wife four years ago. Mueller's arraignment is scheduled for next Wednesday, at which time he'll be able to enter a plea.




County Commissioners meeting

Two volunteer fire departments will be getting financial help from Uncle Sam for fighting last year's Wildcat fire. Tom Green County Commissioners voted TUesday to accept funding from FEMA for wildfire assistance: almost 10-thousand dollars for Grape Creek and almost 20-thousand dollars for Water valley. In other action, county commissioner appointed Judge Penny Roberts to oversee the bail bonds board.

Rainfall above average

The Concho Valley is about four inches ahead of the average amount of rainfall for the first two months of the year. We got two and a third inches of rain over the weekend. Since February is normally a low month for rainfall, that's an indication we could get more in the spring.

Shooting arrest

San Angelo police have made an arrest in connection with that in-traffic shooting on North Chadbourne Monday. 32-year-old Baltazar Borrego of San Angelo man is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Borrego allegedly firedd a handgun at a woman's car with the bullet hitting the car's trunk. The woman had called 9-1-1 to say she was being chased by a driver in a pickup truck.

City Council meeting

The San Angelo City Council will hire an executive search firm to find a new city manager. Harold Dominguez is leaving that post next month for a similar job in Colorado. City finance director Michael Dane is serving as interim city manager.
In other action, the council discussed a proposed agreement to operate the proposed performing arts center in partnership with the San Angelo Performing Arts Coalition. They will again take up the issue during their March 6th meeting.

ASU open house

Thousands of plant and animal specimens will be on public display when the Angelo State Natural History Collections hosts a free open house next Tuesday in the Cavness Science Building on Dena Drive on the ASU campus. All of the collections will be open for tours. Light refreshments will be served and families are encouraged to attend.

Library book signing

A book signing is scheduled for next month at the Stephens Central Library. Author Winston Menzies will be autographing copies of "Spirit of Texas," the story of his great grandfather William Menzies's immigration to Texas in the 1870's and the ranching empire he subsequently founded. Winston Menzies will be at the library Thursday, March 8th from 2 to 4 PM.


Severe Weather Awareness Week

Straight-line wind storms, thunderstorms and tornadoes can occur at any time of year in Texas. So it pays for individuals and families to plan what to do well in advance. This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Texas. The Texas Department of Public Safety and the National Weather Service remind you that this is a good time to talk to your friends and family about emergency preparedness.

ASU's perfect record

For the 15th straight year, Angelo State University students have maintained a 100 percent passing rate on the teacher certification test for secondary mathematics. Seven ASU students took the Texas Examination of Educator Standards in February, and their average score of 277-point-3 out of 300 is the highest average ever posted by an ASU class. It is also well above last year's state average score of 226-point-7.

Searchers Seek Down Plane

The search is on for a small aircraft that disappeared last night on a flight to Oklahoma. The single-engined Piper Comanche lost contact and disappeared from radar screens around seven-thirty last night. he search for the plane, which is presumed down, was ramped up again this morning. Searchers concentrating today in Shackelford County. The F-A-A says the pilot's flight plan was filed for a flight from Abilene to Norman, Oklahoma. It isn't known how many people were aboard the plane, which is registered in Delaware.

Mueller hearing

A hearing is scheduled today in Colorado for the San Angelo man accused of killing his wife during a vacation in Colorado four years ago. Frederick Mueller was arrested in San Angelo earlier this month. The death of his wife, Dr. Leslie Mueller, was first reported as being accidental.

Stock Show and Rodeo

Organizers are reporting the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo got off to a great start with sold-out performances on Saturday and Sunday and all but a few tickets sold for Thursday and Friday. It's a similar story this week--the shows on Friday and Saturday are sold out, but tickets are available for Wednesday night and Thursday night.


Warrant roundup

You can still pay up before you get rounded up. The Texas warrant roundup begins this Saturday, but this week those with outstanding warrants can pay their fines at the municipal court building in San Angelo. Payments will be taken in person or over the phone. There are about 10-thousand outstanding warrants in Tom Green and surrounding counties.


Shooting incident

A woman driving a car on North Chadbourne Monday called San Angelo police to say she was being followed by two vehicles--one of them a tan Chevy pickup. A shot was fired, with the bullet hitting the woman's car on the right side. It was apparently fired from the pickup, which was later located in the 22-hundred block of Forest Park. As of last night, police were questioning two men in connection with the case.

ASU Foreign Affairs Speaker

A scholar at the Middle East Institute in Washington will be the featured speaker for Angelo State University's Foreign Affairs Speaker Program next Monday. Molly Williamson will make two appearances, at 2 PM and 8 PM, at the C.J. Davidson Conference Center and both are open free to the public. Williamson will also speak to students in business, political science, communication and history classes.

Bonnie Blue Flag presentation

You can learn the story of the Bonnie Blue Flag at the next meeting of the San Angelo Genealogical and Historical Society. Guest speaker Ken Phipps will trace the history of the Bonnie Blue Flag from its origin as the flag of the Republic of West Florida to its inspiration for the first flag of the Republic of Texas. The meeting will begin at 7 PM on Tuesday, March 6th at the Trinity Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall on YMCA Drive.

Sports headlines

The Central Bobcats have had a fantastic season so far, compiling a 29-5 record, and enter the playoffs with momentum. The Bobcats will take on Arlington Lamar - with a 12-17 record - in a 5A bi-district playoff at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Clyde. With a win, it would be the first in the playoffs for Central since 2001.

Angelo State University Athletic Director has announced her retirement, effective May 31st. Under the leadership of Kathleen Brasfield, ASU women's athletics expanded and earned the university's first two NCAA Division II national championships.

The ASU Rams beat Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon and that put the Rams in sole possession of eighth place in the LSC with just two games remaining in the regular season. The top eight teams will qualify for the LSC Tournament next month. The Rams host Tarleton State Wednesday.



Hazardous weather outlook

The National Weather Service at San Angelo has issued a hazardous weather outlook the Concho Valley. Gusty winds will produce choppy and hazardous conditions on area lakes. And a red flag warning for fire weather conditions is also in effect.


San Angelo most wanted

San Angelo`s latest Most Wanted is a fugitive sought for sex crimes involving a minor. 58-year-old Futoso Lozano Puente is 5-8, 175 pounds with black and grey hair and brown eyes and scars on his arms from acid burns. His last known vehicles were a 2002 teal-blue Chevy Malibu and a late 90's green Chevy pickup, both with New Mexico plates. County health program

We'll get details this week on a new initiative to improve health in Tom Green County. The county recently received a contract from the Texas Department of State Health Services to promote certain health behaviors and reduce the number of preventable hospitalizations among adult residents. The program is a partnership between the County, Shannon Medical Center, Angelo State University, Baptist Memorial and San Angelo Community Medical Center. The goal will be to reduce preventable hospitalizations related to bacterial pneumonia, urinary tract infections and COPD.

Get Fit classes

It's Get Fit week and the San Angelo Civic Ballet is doing its part by offering free community adult and teen fitness classes tomorrow through Saturday. Dance classes include contemporary dance, salsa, and Broadway Fit. Pilates classes are offered as well.

Warrant round-up

The big warrant roundup is underway in the San Angelo area with thousands of residents getting their name in the paper for having outstanding warrants. They'll be rounded up and put in jail as a way for the city and Tom Green County to collect unpaid fines.

Trade Summit

The public is invited to the 3rd Annual West Texas Trade Summit this week. It's designed to promote trade relations and transportation networking and provide for understanding issues of economic interest between Texas and Mexico. There's a welcome event Wednesday evening at the Top of the Cactus and a conference all day Thursday at the Stephens Library.

Sonrisas wants volunteers

Sonrisas, a locally-based non profit organization, provides equine therapy to those living with mental, physical and emotional challenges. The riding center provides its services free of charge and begins its spring semester next Tuesday. Sonrisas is looking for volunteers; if you're interested, show up for training next Monday at 9:30 AM at the Sonrisas complex on East 50th Street.


Jazz Divas at ASU

Angelo State University will present award-winning jazz duet Julie Davis and Kelly Dow performing their "Great Jazz Divas" show tomorrow evening in the Houston Harte University Center on Rosemont Drive. Davis and Dow's multimedia program celebrating women, music and history will begin at 7 p.m. in the University Center's C.J. Davidson Conference Center and is open free to the public.

Sports headlines for Friday

Only two cowboys were able to stay on the back of their bulls last night at the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo on opening night. Cody Somora of Cortez, Colorado, and Brandon Wesson of Delware, Oklahoma. The rodeo continues over the next ten days and features over 1200 of the world's best cowboys.

The Wall Lady Hawks are ranked 15th in the state polls with a 23-8 record and a perfect 10-0 mark in the district. They'll play Clyde in the playoffs tonight at 7 in Abilene.

The Angelo State Rams and Belles host Incarnate Word tomorrow. The Belles tip at 5:30 and the Rams follow at 7:30.

The 2012 Bash It Out Softball Tournament continues today. Wall started off well yesterday with wins, and Central went 1-1 on the first day. Lake View beat Junction. Action continues all day today. Lake View and Central play at 6pm, and Wall will take on Junction at 8.

CAC fundraiser a success

Tuesday night proved to be a record-setting night for the Children's Advocacy Center of Tom Green County. The 2011 Champagne and Diamonds fundraising event at the Cactus Hotel was attended by more than 200 people who donated a total of 28-thousand-600 dollars.


Rodeo opens

A milestone edition of the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo opened last night at the Coliseum. This is the 80th annual Stock Show and Rodeo. The first year, 1932, there were 63 entrants; this year, 12-hundred-57 of the best rodeo cowboys from all over the world will be competing in San Angelo. The event continues through February 25th.

Housefire followup

It turns out that the owner of a home on Irving in North San Angelo that was destroyed by fire Wednesday night had passed away some time ago and the five people living there were vagrants. None of them were hurt in the fire. In fact, when fire marshalls returned to the house Thursday morning, they found somebody sleeping inside. Damage to the house was so severe that it had to be bulldozed. Cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.


Read to Me tomorrow

Local celebrities will be reading to kids tomorrow at Sunset Mall. The Junior League of San Angelo is hosting the Read-To-Me event from 11 AM to 2 PM featuring San Angelo Mayor Alvin New, Police Chief Tim Vasquez, the ASU cheerleaders and others. It's free for children of all ages and, while supplies last, each kid gets a free book.

Author speaks tonight

A best-selling author will speak at Angelo State University tonight on the topics of college dating and relationships. Harlan Cohen, author of the New York Times bestseller "The Naked Roommate" and writer of the syndicated advice column "Help Me, Harlan!" will appear at 7 PM at the Houston Harte University Center on Rosemont Drive. Cohen's talk is open free to the public.


Blood drive continues

United Blood Services of San Angelo continues its "Straight from the Heart Blood Drive." It runs through February 25th and includes gifts for each donor, plus entry into daily prize drawings and the drawing for grand prizes, including a George Strait autographed hat and two tickets to the final rodeo performance. San Angelo housefire

A housefire in north San Angelo is under investigation. It happened last night. The blaze destroyed a wood-frame home and a nearby storage room at Irving and West 24th Street, a block off North Chadbourne. Despite the efforts of firefighters in three trucks, the structures could not be saved. There were four people in the home when the fire broke out and all got out safely.

Smash and grab burglars

Another common sense reminder from the San Angelo Police Department: do not leave valuables in your car--or at least make sure they are out of sight. Several vehicles were hit recently by smash and grab burglars who break a window and then take items inside the vehicle. The crimes occurred along West Beauregard and Sherwood Way, in the parking lots of Logan's Roadhouse, Henry's Diner and Catfish Corner. ASU hosts author

Angelo State University will host a best-selling author tomorrow. Harlan Cohen, who wrote the New York Times bestseller "The Naked Roommate," and writes the syndicated advice column, "Help Me, Harlan!" will speak about college dating and relationships at 7 PM in the Houston Harte University Center on Rosemont Drive. The program is open free to the public.


ASU physics award

The Angelo State University chapter of the Society of Physics Students has been honored with a Marsh W. White Award and corresponding grant from the SPS National Office. The group will use the 300 dollar grant to help fund a new after-school project in conjunction with the San Angelo YMCA titled “P.A.S.S.: Physics After School Special," involving a visit to campus by some 30 2nd through 5th grade students.

Read to Me event

The Junior League of San Angelo is hosting a Read-To-Me event this Saturday at Sunset Mall. Children of all ages are invited to attend and hear stories from celebrity readers, including San Angelo Mayor Alvin New, Police Chief TIm Vasquez and the ASU cheerleaders. It's free to attend and each child will receive a free book while supplies last.

Shannon donations

Shannon Medical Center is accepting durable medical equipment donations. The equipment drive which took place in October was a huge success, but supplies are once again low. Any and all durable medical equipment is accepted as are monetary donations.

Habitat for Humanity

You can save big this weekend on new and used building materials as the Habitat for Humanity Warehouse Restore opens to the public. They're selling paint for just a dollar a gallon, mini blinds for a dollar. Five dollars gets you large blinds, doors, windows, commodes and light fixtures. Save money on those home improvements and help a good cause: Habitat for Humanity's ReStore will be open Saturday morning from 8:30 to 11:30. The address is 401 North Chadbourne Street.

Pancake Day

For the seventh year in a row, IHOP restaurants nationwide and here in San Angelo will offer guests a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes on National Pancake Day. In return, IHOP guests are invited to make a voluntary donation to Shriners Hospital for Children and other local charities. It's 15 hours of Free Flapjacks--from 7 AM to 10 PM--on Tuesday, February 28th.

Hearing Set In Mueller Trial

A hearing has now been set for next week for a San Angelo businessman accused of murdering his wife in Colorado. Frederick Mueller is being held without bond in teh Gunnison County Jail in Gunnison, Colorado. He was arrested in San Angelo on a charge of killing his wife, Doctor, Leslie Mueller, while vacationing in Hinsdale County, Colorado, four years ago. Colorado officials determined Leslie Mueller died by drowning May 3, 2008, on Cottonwood Creek between Cataract Gulch and Cuba Gulch, according to a Hinsdale County Sheriff's Office news release. The hearing next week will determine whether there's sufficient evidence to proceed with a murder charge or whether the case against Mueller should be dropped.

Goodfellow staying

Despite big budget cuts proposed for the Department of Defense, San Angelo's Goodfellow Air Force Base is not going anywhere. That was the word from the commander of Goodfellow's 17th Training Wing, Colonel Mark Damiano, as he addressed the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon on Tuesday.

New sheriff's department radios

The Tom Green County Sheriff's Department will be getting a new radio system. County commissioners have approved an 18-thousand dollar grant to pay for the upgrade. Nine new portable radios will give deputies access to more channels to stay connected during disaster scenarios with each other and with deputies in other counties.



Most Wanted caught here

A fugitive from Wisconsin recently featured on the TV show "America's Most Wanted" has been arrested in San Angelo. 28-year-old Michael Henry Mack was wanted for arson, felony bail jumping and first-degree reckless endangerment. Tips from viewers of America's Most Wanted led to Mack's arrest Monday afternoon by U.S. Marshalls on East 43rd Street.

ASU spring enrollment

For the third consecutive year, Angelo State University set a spring semester enrollment record with six-thousand-379 students. That's up three percent from last year's spring enrollment. ASU President Joseph Rallo said the numbers--quote--"reflect the many positive steps we are taking as an institution to increase both our enrollment and our retention."

State comptroller in town

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs will be in San Angelo tomorrow evening at 6 at the Tom Green County Primary office. Combs will be the keynote speaker for the 2012 Tom Green County GOP Round-up to kickoff the new election year. The outdoor event is open to the public. Right after the rally, the comptroller will be a VIP guest at the San Angelo Rodeo and Stock Show.


Shannon recognition

Two departments at Shannon Medical Center have been recognized by respected national organizations. Shannon's Laboratory received national accreditation from the the College of American Pathologists based on the results of an onsite inspection. And all of Shannon's Communication Specialists on staff have completed coursework and training to reach Certified Flight Communicator status. The specialists coordinate the logistics of AirMed1 transport, assuring prompt response to traumatic and medical emergencies.

Rams Read

Angelo State University football players are set to begin a volunteer reading partnership at three San Angelo elementary schools today. "Rams Read" kicks off at Bradford, Fannin and Reagan elementaries. ASU head football coach Will Wagner suggested the program to school officials as a way for his players to give back to the community and to reinforce in young students the value of reading.

Libertarian Runs For Sheriff

Is there a place for the Libertarian political viewpoint in local law enforcement? We'll see because now there's a Libertarian candidate for Tom Green County Sheriff. David Benton announcing his candidacy this week and saying laws should be enforced when people need to be protected, not simply because they're on the books. Benton comes to the race as a Sheriff's outsider: he has a criminal justice degree from Angelo State, is a firearms instructor and has worked security at Goodfellow Air Force Base.

Above-Average Precipitation Recorded

Finally, some good news rain-wise: San Angelo is well ahead of its normal rain- and snow precipitation for this time of year. As we dry out from recent wintry rain and snow that added an additional three-tenths of an inch or more to the total, the Weather Service says we've now received over three-and-a-half inches of moisture for 2012. That's about an inch-and-a-half more than normal and far ahead of this time last year, when the Concho Valley had received less than an inch of rain and snow.

An America's Most Wanted Fugitive Arrested Here

We regularly tell you about San Angelo's Most Wanted and when they're captured. Now, an "America's Most Wanted" suspect is in the Tom Green County Jail. A deputy U-S Marshal arresting 28-year-old Michael Mack on East 43rd Street in San Angelo. Mack is listed as one of Wisconsin's most wanted fugitives and was featured on teh T-V show "America's Most Wanted" on January 28th. Authorities say it was viewer tips from that program that led to his arrest here. Mack wanted for arson, bail-jumping and reckless endangerment.

Tuesday a big night for high school basketball

The Central boys basketball team will finish up the regular season tonight. The Cats already know they'll be playing Arlington Lamar next Tuesday, February 21st, in the first round of the playoffs. The Cats close out their season tonight at Midland High, and Midland has something to play for. They're going for the final playoff spot in district 3-5A. Central wants to finish the district schedule undefeated.

The Lady Cats kick off the playoffs tonight against Arlington Lamar. The Central ladies finished 3rd in the district with a 16-12 record and Arlington Lamar finished second. The Central Lady Cats haven't been in the playoffs since 2008 and haven't won a playoff game since 1998.

The No. 12-ranked Wall Hawks have already won their district title and secured a first-round bye. They'll close out the regular season in Sonora tonight, and with a win they'd be perfect in district play.

Accused murderer extradited

The San Angelo man accused of murdering his wife in Colorado has been transported back to that state. 49-year-old Frederick Mueller was taken from the Tom Green County Jail to the Gunnison County Jail in Colorado on Friday. The 2008 death of Dr. Leslie Mueller on the couple's property was originally ruled an accident. But after four years of investigation, a district attorney believes the wife died from being drowned.

Slip and slide

Things got slippery in the San Angelo area Sunday night thanks to slush and ice on the roadways. City police and Tom Green County sheriff's deputies say there were more than 40 wrecks over a six hour time period. That includes eight wrecks all around the same time on the bridge over Bryant Boulevard.



Stolen car tips

It seems obvious, but San Angelo police are warning you to never leave a vehicle unattended while it's running or leave spare keys inside the vehicle. As they investigated vehicle thiefts that took place weekend before last, officers discovered that several of the vehicles had been left running--either while it was being warmed up or while the driver ran an errand. In one case, a vehicle was stolen thanks to the key being left in the center console.

Weather delays

The National Weather Service at San Angelo is warning of hazardous driving conditions in the Concho Valley this morning because of snow and ice.

Meanwhile, a number of schools are starting late this morning. All schools are delayed two hours in the San Angelo ISD. Scheduled for a 10 AM start are the following school districts: Miles, Water Valley, Grape Creek, Irion County, Christoval, Eldorado, Junction, Menard, Wall and Paint Creek.

Tom Green County Government Offices will open at 10 AM and reporting at Goodfellow Air Force Base is delayed until 10 AM.


Storage unit burglaries

If you rent a storage unit, San Angelo police are advising you to take precautions. Several of the units in the southwest part of the city have been burglarized recently and, according to police, the burglars only broke into units with lower quality locks. That's why they say you should invest in high security locks. Also, photograph the possessions in your unit and record the serial numbers on electronics to help police track down stolen items.

San Angelo drug bust

A couple of San Angelo men were busted over the weekend. Late Saturday night, officers with the Narcotics Division of the San Angelo police department searched a residence in the 200 block of West 26th and found about a pound and a half of what's believed to be methamphetamine, alog with scales, drug packaging, cash and a handgun. Arrested were 60-year-old Jose DeLeon and 55-year-old Ruben Bergara.

CAC fundraiser

The Children's Advocacy Center of Tom Green County presents the 11th Annual "Champagne and Diamonds" Valentine's Fundraising Dinner, tomorrow night. it gets underway at 6:30 PM at the Cactus Hotel. The CAC is celebrating 20 years of helping abused and neglected children in the Concho Valley. All proceeds will benefit the organization. For more information, call 653-HOPE.

Business Brown Bags are back. The ASU Small Business Development Center, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Concho Valley Center for Entrepreneurial Development have teamed up to provide entrepreneurs and business owners with another year of the informative speaker series. The first series of the year will be “Planning for a Better Business” and begins this Thursday from noon to 1 in the Riverview Room at the Visitors Center on West Avenue B. Wall VFD donation

Thanks to a Tom Green County farmer, the Wall Volunteer Fire Department has some extra money to replace old and outdated equipment. Doyle Schniers won 25-hundred dollars from the organization America's Farmers Grow Communities to give to the nonprofit group of his choice. Schniers chose the Wall VFD and presented them with the money last week.


Goodfellow chamber update

What's new at Goodfellow Air Force Base? The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce will find out tomorrow at its monthly luncheon. The guest will be Goodfellow Commander Colonel Mark Damiano, who will provide an update for the Chamber membership on the base's mission, ongoing construction projects and future plans.

Long Prison Term For DUI Manslaughter

Enough is enough. That's essentially what a judge in San Angelo said this morning in handing along prison term to a man with several previous drunk driving convictions, the latest of which resulted in a death. Judge Ben Woodward handed down a forty-five year prison sentence to a sixty-year-old Mexican national in the June, 2011, death of James Young. The judge ruling the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Two sentences actually handed down: one of ten years for intoxicated assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury; the other a 35-year term for intoxication manslaughter, to be served concurrently. It's likely the defendant will be deported to Mexico.

More stolen vehicles

We told you about a police chase in San Angelo Tuesday morning that resulted inthe arrests of three people for stealing a car. Since then, detectives have learned that two more stolen vehicles are connected to the suspects, Chad Alexander Ramirez, Trent Watson and a 15-year-old juvenile. Both vehicles were recovered Thursday and returned to their owners. The suspects are also facing charges involving several vehicle burglaries in southwest San Angelo.

ASU symposium winner

An Angelo State University art major has been named the top prize winner in ASU's 2011 Holland Symposium Student Contest. Sean Halstead, who specializes in graphic design, won first place and a 500 dollar prize for his digital print, "Pigskin Pledge." All contest entries will be on public display March 1st through the 23rd in the ASU Art Gallery in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building on Dena Drive.

Huge Number Of Young Adults Unemployed

The share of young West Texas adults with jobs has hit its lowest level since the government started keeping records just after World War II. And that matches a national trend. Only 54 percent of those between the ages of 18 and 24 are employed, according to a Pew Research Center report released today. And the gap in employment between the young and all working-age adults is roughly 15 percentage points -- the widest on record. Only part of this can be explained by the growth in college attendance. While a greater share of 18- to 24-year-olds are in school than ever before, the report says the 18-to-24 employment rate has fallen regardless of enrollment.

Tom Green bust

Tom Green County sheriff's deputies made a drug bust Wednesday. A search of a residence on East 13th Street turned up marijuana and items used to distribute marijuana, as well as methamphetamine and items used to distribute meth. They also found a large amount of cash. 33-year-old Raul Cavazos and 23-year-old Jesusita Chavez were arrested and charged with manufature and delivery of methamphetamine, a first-degree felony.


Car thieves caught

On Tuesday morning, a San Angelo police officer spotted a 2001 Dodge Durango that had been reported stolen two hours earlier from apartments on Benedict. After a five-minute chase, the Durango crashed into a fence on Woodruff and four people inside fled on foot. Three were captured and police identified them as Chad Alexander Ramirez, Trent Watson and a 15-year-old juvenile. The fourth suspect was not found.


San Angelo checkpoint

It's always a good idea to have your driver's license and proof of insurance when you are operating a motor vehicle. Motorists were reminded of that Wednesday morning as San Angelo police conducted a checkpoint in the 1500 block of Glenna Drive. More than 500 drivers were checked and, of those, 64 were cited for no insurance and 50 for no driver's license. In addition, eight people were arrested on city and county warrants.

San Angelo City Council

The San Angelo City Council has named an interim city manager. Director of Finance Michael Dane will take over for Harold Dominguez, who is leaving to become city manager in Longmont, Colorado. The council took no action on a proposal to form a committee to explore the development of a new jogging trail on top of Gun Club Hill ner the KOA Campground. And the council voted to change a city ordinance to allow unlimited hand-watering of lawns, trees and home foundations during drought conditions.




Severe Weather Week

Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed the week after next, February 19th through the 25th, as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Texas. The National Weather in San Angelo encourages all residents and schools across West Central Texas to practice their tornado warning drill on Thursday, February 23rd at 9:30 AM. That's when the weather service will transmit a Special Message through the Emergency Alert System.

Collision Injures Funeral Escort

An accident involving a funeral escort motorcycle has seen its rider to a San Angelo hospital. Police say escort rider Russ Frasier was escorting a funeral procession in the area of HUmble Road and North Bryant when a pickup that was preparing to turn onto Bryant ran into him. Frasier was taken to Shannon Regional Medical Center with unspecified injuries. The driver of the pickup is being charged with failure to yield.

Council Considers New Watering Plan

With water supplies very much in mind, the San Angelo City Council is looking at ways to make it go further by re-writing regulations on watering home lawns and plants. An ordinance under consideration this week would allow hand watering at any time and would expand teh definition of drip irrigation to include bubbler systems, soaker hoses and deep-root watering systems. All would be allowed provided the total amount of home irrigation doesn't exceed one inch per week. So, the amount of water per week would still be restricted -- how you put it on your grass and plants would be mostly up to you.

Sports headlines for Tuesday

Tonight could be a big night for the Central boys basketball team. The Cats can clinch their first outright district title in boys basketball since 1963 if they can beat last-place Odessa High. The Cats are on a streak 11 straight wins and they're 9-0 in the district.

The Central Lady Cats are also playing at Odessa tonight, and they've already locked up the #3 seed in the district.

The Lake View Maidens have their season finale tonight at home against Waco High. It will be the last game for five Lake View seniors. On the boys side, the Lake View Chiefs are at Waco High.

The Angelo State basketball teams are off tonight, and they'll play tomorrow at home against Eastern New Mexico.

Angelo State baseball tries to continue a perfect start to the season at St. Marys in San Antonio today. St. Marys is also coming off a season opening sweep.

SA City Council meeting

San Angelo City Council members will discuss appointing an interim city manager when they meet later this morning. Current city manager Harold Dominguez has accepted an offer to take over that post in Longmont, Colorado. Another item on the agenda: a proposal to form a committee to look into raising money to build a jogging trail near Lake Nasworthy by the KOA Campground. The meeting will be held at the McNease Convention Center.

Area Agency on Aging

The Area Agency on Aging of the Concho Valley strives to provide information, assistance, and services to the older citizens of Coke County. AAA staff will be available to assist individuals on Monday, February 20th - 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 pm at the Bronte Senior Citizens Center on East Oliver and the Robert Lee Senior Center on County Park Rd. from Noon – 1pm.

Police chief seeks re-election

San Angelo Police Chief Tim Vasquez wants to keep his job. Vasquez filed Monday morning for the May city election, in which he will be seeking his third term. Back in 2004, Vasquez became the first Hispanic and second youngest person ever elected to be police chief of San Angelo. He claims that the latest figures show that crime has dropped almost 40 percent since he took office.

First Day To File For Municipal Offices

Today is the first day for candidates for San Angelo municipal offices to file. And if you're going to run, be prepared for some paperwork. City officials say the free candidate packet includes a CD containing over two hundred documents in PDF format, although every candidate doesn't have to fill out every document. There are also several printed forms. The documents candidates need have include guides to campaign finance and advertising rules. Candidates can file through March fifth for the municipal election on May 12th.

Gas most expensive

Motorists paid more for a gallon of gas this past January than ever before. January's monthly average was three dollars 37 cents, according to AAA's Fuel Gauge Report, 28 cents more than the year before and 66 cents more than in 2010 when the monthly average was two-71. The national average is expected to surpass three-50 a gallon this week. The average in Texas is three-38 a gallon, up 46 cents from one year ago.

Texans not saving

Texas ranks 41st nationally when it comes to financial security, according to the 2012 "Assets and Opportunities Scorecard." The nonprofit Corporation for Enterprise Development gives the state a “D,” claiming that over half of all residents lack any meaningful financial cushions besides their homes and vehicles. That means not enough Texans are prepared for unexpected “rainy days” such as medical or employment setbacks.

Roundup on the way

If you a fine, now's the time to pay up before you get thrown in jail during the annual Great Texas Roundup. Some three and a half million dollars is owed and those with warrants can pay their fines before Friday to avoid the Roundup and having their name published in the newspaper.

Vandalism suspects sought

The public's help is sought in finding those reponsible for the vandalism to vehicles that happened all over San Angelo overnight on January 27th. There have been more than 100 incidents reported with damages exceeding 40-thousand dollars. Windows were broken with a pellet or BB gun. Crime Stoppers is offering reward for information of one-thousand dollars as is the San Angelo Police Department. The number to call is 658-HELP.


Elections office closed tomorrow

If you have business with the Tom Green County Election Office, you won't be able to take care of it tomorrow. Elections office employees will be attending a meeting tomorrow and the office will be closed. It will be back open Wednesday.

New district engineer

The Texas Department of Transportation has announced the appointment of the new District Engineer for the San Angelo District. Tracy Cain most recently served as the Director of Transportation Planning and Development for the Amarillo District. He replaces John Obr, who was promoted from District Engineer to Director of Construction for TxDOT in November after one year in San Angelo.

Planetarium shows

Angelo State University's Global Immersion Center, formerly the Planetarium, is presenting three full-dome public astronomy shows during its spring 2012 schedule which began Thursday. It's in the Vincent Nursing-Physical Science Building on Vanderventer Street. The schedule includes two shows never before seen at ASU, "Passport to the Universe," narrated by Tom Hanks, and "Expanded View," featuring images captured by the Hubble and other space telescopes.

Eden Bridge project

TxDOT reminds motorists to be cautious if they're traveling on U.S. 87 through Eden. Construction is underway on a new one-point-three million dollar Eden Bridge over Harding Creek and traffic is being narrowed to one lane in each direction. It will take about 10 months to complete the project, which involves replacing the old bridge that was built in 1933.

College Goal Sunday

San Angelo high school students and their parents are invited to attend College Goal Sunday on February 12th from 2 to 4 PM in the Sunset Mall Community Room. Volunteers and financial aid professionals will be available to help families of college-bound students complete the FAFSA financial aid form. Drawings will be held for several scholarships. United Way total

The United Way of the Concho Valley is out with the final figures for its 2011 fundraising campaign. The organization asked West Texans to--quote--"Be there" for their community. And they showed up. As of January 31st, 2012, the United Way Community Campaign had raised a total of two-million, 38-thousand-624 dollars. Campaign Chair Brenda Gunter said, "I am so proud of the people in the Concho Valley who continue to help those in need around us."

Weather Service birthday party

You can celebrate the birthday of the National Weather Service right here in San Angelo tomorrow. The San Angelo Amateur Radio Club is throwing a party for the forecasting agency, which is turning 142 this year. It was originally known as the National Weather Bureau when it was established by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Grant in 1870. The celebration starts at 10 AM and includes lunch at the Radio Club house at Mathis Field Airport.


Go Red Luncheon

More than 500 people, many of them ladies in red, attended Wednesday's Go Red Luncheon at the McNease Convention Center. The annual event benefits the American Heart Association. Information was provided to help educate women as to the dangers of heart disease. Tomorrow is National Wear Red Day to show support for the American Heart Association.

Educational Service Center

Here's your chance to get involved with the school system. The Educational Service Center has three open positions on the board of directors for Region Fifteen. Applications are being taken through February 20th. It's an unpaid position and you must live in the area you want to represent. Approval is up to your local school board members.

Gas prices rising

You've probably noticed if you've stopped to fill up lately, but the price of gas in Texas continues to increase. As of today, Triple-A's Daily Fuel Gauge Report shows the statewide average price for a gallon of regular is three-38--that's up 13 cents in the last week and 29 cents from one month ago. Here in San Angelo, a check of gas-buddy-dot-com shows prices ranging from three-thirty to three-49 a gallon.

San Angelo accident

One person was injured and one person was ticketed in a Wednesday morning accident in San Angelo. Police say a woman driving a silver Ford Focus was trying to turn left from Bryant onto Seventh Street when she pulled out in front of a 1974 Corvette. The Corvette swerved to miss her and hit a light pole. The Corvette driver was hospitalized; the Focus driver was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

Prairie Dog Day

The San Angelo Nature Center is celebrating Groundhog Day. The public is invited to come out at 10 o'clock this morning to find out if Ethel the prairie dog sees her shadow. If she does, legend says it's six more weeks of winter weather; if she doesn't, winter weather will end soon. You can find the Nature Center at 7409 Knickerbocker Road.


Lunch and Learn

The Concho Valley C.A.R.E.S. Coalition, will host their next Lunch and Learn next Wednesday, February 8th from noon to 1 PM at River Crest Hospital on Hunters Glen Rd in San Angelo. Ruby Moore, Program Manager for Youth Tobacco Prevention at the Texas School Safety Center, will join the coalition to discuss Youth Tobacco Use and Prevention. South Korean teachers visit

Angelo State University's College of Education will host four South Korean English teachers while they observe classes in San Angelo public schools beginning tomorrow and continuing all next week. They will also observe education classes at ASU. The visitors will also sample and study West Texas culture before leaving for home on February 14th.


Jets return

Jet service has returned to San Angelo for the first time since October 2008. Because American Airlines' parent company has filed for bankruptcy, jets have been pulled from other cities and are now available in San Angelo. American Eagle is replacing its turbo props with jets for the four flights daily to and from Dallas-Fort Worth, cutting flying time by some 20 minutes.

Christoval arrest

An arrest has been made in connection with the alleged kidnapping, burglary and sexual assault of an elderly woman in Christoval last week. The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office says 43-year-old Joseph Paul Lee broke into the woman's home, threatened to kill her and her grandson and then assaulted her after forcing her to drink alcohol. Lee was released on 200-thousand dollars bond.

Housing Authority extended

Up to now, the San Angelo Public Housing Authority was not allowed to help residents living more than five miles outside the city limits. Tuesday, Tom Green County Commissioners approved an extension of the Authority's service area. The agency handles rental assistance and financial aid from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.


NAACP banquet

The theme of this year's NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet is "2012 NAACP - Obsolete or Still Necessary?" The banquet is an annual event that raises money for college scholarships that the San Angelo chapter of the NAACP awards to high school seniors. It is scheduled for 7 PM on February 18th at the McNease Convention Center on Rio Concho Drive.

Robert Lee water

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality says that, in the month of January, the city of Robert Lee failed to meet one of the minimum water quality standards for public drinking water. Robert Lee was above the limit on turbidity, which can interfere with disinfection and provide for the growth of microbes. An emergency water pipeline between Robert Lee and Bronte should be finished in six to eight weeks and should prevent a reoccurrence of this violation.

Land Reclamation Seminar

Ranchers and landowners who want to bring life, including water, back to their land will want to attend The West Texas Land Reclamation Seminar being held in San Angelo next month. Guest speakers will include conservationist David Bamberger of the Selah Ranch Preserve in Johnson City. The seminar is scheduled for Saturday, March 3rd at the 4-H Building on Highway 67.
