Fun at the Fort

Fort Concho's "Fun at the Fort" children's summer program touches on a dozen topics, spanning from chuckwagon cooking and genealogy to sewing and 1800s base ball. All sessions but one are from 9:30 a.m. until noon at the fort, 630 South Oakes Street; the cost is 10 or 15 dollars per child; and caters to ages six through14. Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register early. Registration forms are available at fort-concho-dot-com under the "Educational Programs" link.

Cinco de Mayo

The Southside Lions Club hosts its annual Cinco de Mayo celebration tomorrow and Saturday at El Paseo de Santa Angela. The Lions' event will include food booths, San Angelo Ballet Azteca dancers, Mariachi Alma Mexicana, and a dance featuring a live deejay.. This year, the event also features a carnival that will be open from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. today and tomorrow, from 2 p.m.-midnight Saturday and from 4 p.m.-10 p.m. Sunday.

Special weather statement

It's going to be very hot today then very cold tonight. The National Weather Service at San Angelo says a cold front will move into west central Texas and the Concho Valley this evening and tomorrow morning. It will bring showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be severe with large hail. Temperatures will drop into the 40's tonight and might hit 50 for a high tomorrow. Also, gusty winds might cause areas of blowing dust, causing difficult driving conditions on east-west roads, including Interstates 10 and 20.

Magic Valley Carnival

The Magic Valley Carnival kicks off today. The Carnival officially starts at 6 PM and continues through Sunday on the West side of the Paseo de Santa Angela grounds on Avenue D. It's part of the Southside Lions Club annual Cinco de Mayo festival. The Cinco fiestas start Friday at 5 PM. You can find out more on the City of San Angelo Civic Events Facebook page.

Lake Nasworthy meetings

The City of San Angelo is hosting two public meetings this week to gather public input for a comprehensive plan for developing land around Lake Nasworthy. The meetings will include a presentation from Gateway Planning Group, which was hired by the city council to craft a master plan for developing Lake Nasworthy for recreational, residential and commercial uses. Each of the meetings will be in the City Council chambers/South Meeting Room at the McNease Convention Center, 500 Rio Concho Drive. The first meeting is this morning from 8:30 to 10 and the other is tomorrow night from 6 to 7:30.

Car versus animal clinic

San Angelo Police were called to South Oakes Street early last Saturday morning for a hit and run crash involving the Angelo Animal Clinic. A witness said that a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro traveling east on West Avenue N at a high rate of speed crashed into the south side of the clinic. The driver reportedly exited the vehicle and ran northbound on Oakes. About a block away, a man flagged down a patrol car, claiming to be the victim of a crime. However, police concluded that 27-year-old Salvador Patlan of San Angelo, who appeared to be intoxicated, was actually the driver of the Camaro. Patlan was arrested after being taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash, which caused major damage to the Animal Clinic.

Bomb scare

Businesses in and adjacent to The Commons Shopping Center at Sherwood Way and Arden Road were inaccessible for about 3½ hours Tuesday as law enforcement officials investigated a suspicious package left in the parking lot. It was a hard-shelled plastic container and a bomb-sniffing dog from Goodfellow Air Force Base and the Abilene Police Department's bomb squad, the closest such operation to San Angelo, were summoned. No explosives were found. Fire Marshal Ross Coleman said they hated having to disrupt those businesses, but--quote--"In the wake of recent events in Boston and West, Texas, it's a simple matter of protecting the public."
