Early runs for Aces do in Colts

Alexandria, La. --- An eight-run third inning propelled the Alexandria Aces to a 10-6 victory over the Colts Sunday night at Bringhurst Field.

The Aces took a 2-0 lead in the first, and then pulled away in the third. Catcher Ryan Gasporra hit a two-run homer, and first baseman Nick Mahin had a three-run shot in the long, eight-run inning. For Gasporra, it was his first home run of the season. Mahin’s homer was his second of the year.

Mahin also had two plate appearances in the inning, and scored twice.

Colts’ starter Derek Christensen (0-1) did not get out of the third. He gave up eight runs, six earned, on five hits in 2 1/3 innings for the loss.

Aces’ starter Jon Jones held San Angelo scoreless through the first five innings. The Colts got on the board in the sixth when catcher Chris Caves hit a two-RBI double that scored right fielder Mike Mobbs and first baseman Kyle Nichols. Caves then scored from second on an RBI double by centerfielder Oscar Garcia.

Jones (2-0) earned the win for Alexandria, allowing three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Aces’ bullpen faltered in the late innings, giving up three more runs.

In the eighth, left fielder Braden Embry hit a two-run homer to cut the Colts’ deficit to 10-5. It was Embry’s team-best third home run of the year. San Angelo scored one more run in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Alexandria’s early offensive output.
