Afternoon sports headlines

The Colts got a 5 to 4 victory over McAllen last night, and that puts San Angelo on a roll. The team has won three in a row and eight out of their last 10 and now leads the North American League South Division by three games over Rio Grande Valley, which lost last night. The Colts and Thunder play the second of their four-game series in San Angelo tonight--game time 7:05.

The Lone Star Series between the Rangers and Astros continued last night in Houston, with the Rangers taking another one. Ian Kinsler's two solo home runs helped in a 3-2 win. The two teams play again tonight to wrap up the series. The Rangers have already won the coveted Silver Boot. The Astros have lost their last five and 19 of their last 24.

The Angelo State Athletic Department has announced the ticket office will sell a general admission family pass and a general admission individual pass that would allow access to all ASU athletic events. Active duty military members and their dependents get free admission to athletic events.

Elevated Fire Weather Conditions - Use Caution

The National Weather Service reports ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS continue today and tonight. Low relative humidities combined with south to southeast winds will keep the danger of wildfire high.

Historic Number of Burn Bans in the State

The Texas Forest Service has confirmed that 235 counties in the state are under burn bans. That is the most in history. And, that means, only 19 counties have not had to enforce the burn bans.

Texas Highway Patrol Focusing Holiday Patrols

The Texas Highway Patrol has already started focused DWI patrols in high risk locations for the Independence Day Holiday. All available troopers are patrolling, through July 6, to try to keep the roadways safer. They’re also focusing on seat belt violators and speeders.

Non-Farm Small Businesses Eligible for Disaster Loans Through SBA

Because of the wildfires and weather, Small Businesses are eligible for disaster assistance. Certain non-farm businesses can apply for low interest disaster loans from the Small Business Administration. The application is at sba.gov

Goodfellow AFB Unveils New Dormitory

Goodfellow Air Force Base has unveiled its new dormitory. The three story building holds 200 rooms, or 400 students, and includes a drill pad and troop walk. It cost 23 million dollars to build.

Baptist Retirement Community Independence Day Parade

The Baptist Retirement Community’s annual Independence Day Parade is tomorrow morning at 9:30. There will be floats, emergency vehicles, free lemonade and watermelon around the campus on North Main Street. This year’s theme is American Heroes.

San Angelo Catholic Diocese Celebrates Sisters at Mass Tomorrow

Two Concho Valley nuns are marking the 50th anniversary of their profession of their vows. Sister Mary Grace Erl is superior of the Carmelite Community near Christoval and Sister Marie Malachy Griffin is vicar for women religious in the Diocese of San Angelo. There’s a Mass in their honor tomorrow at 10 AM at Our Lady of Grace monastery on County Road 339, southeast of Christoval in Schleicher County. The public is invited.

RSVP for Senior Brisket Lunch


Friday, San Angelo's Senior Citizens Division will host a summer picnic with music, games and prizes for people 55 and older. The brisket lunch runs from 11am-1pm at the west pavilion at El Paseo de Santa Angela on Avenue D. The event is five dollars, and reservations are required by end of business today.

Father of Abandoned Boy Charged with Endangering Child

The father of an abandoned four year old has been jailed in Saginaw. Police say Carlos Rico left his son. They haven’t said where. But, the child was found, covered in hundreds of cactus spines, in the middle of I-20, near Sweetwater. He was found by Sweetwater’s basketball coach, who called police.

Unlocked Cars Attracting Thieves

San Angelo Police say there’s been another rash of vehicle break ins. 6 vehicle burglaries were reported in the 200 block of South Jefferson, yesterday. All of the vehicles had been left unlocked. There were also reports of thefts in the 1300 block of South Monroe. The Police Department urging everyone to hide your things, lock your car, take your keys.

Drought Contingency Plan in Effect

Council members have approved a resolution that initiates the city’s drought contingency plan. It kicks in when the city has less than 24 months of water on hand. To conserve dwindling water supplies, there will be only one allowable watering day per week, next month. Residents who rack up excess water usage will have an additional fee added to their water bill.

San Angelo City Budget Talks

San Angelo City Council members worked on the general fund budget for the next fiscal year, yesterday. The 56.2 million dollar spending plan is almost four and a half percent greater than last year’s budget, reflecting higher sales tax and property tax collections. It includes a one percent property tax cut and raises for city employees that add up to 920-thousand dollars. Wishlist items for the Council are more money for street maintenance and its self funded health insurance program.

Fire Weather Conditions Continue

The National Weather Service says ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE TODAY. Low RELATIVE HUMIDITIES combined WITH SOUTH TO SOUTHEAST WINDS mean all residents need to be cautious with anything hot or flammable.

San Angelo Airport Alert Yesterday

The San Angelo airport was on alert, for a time, yesterday. A private pilot had an oil pressure light come on in his plane and was directed to Mathis Field. He was 15 miles out, when he called in the alert about 11:30 am. It was a Gulfstream 1 with the pilot and one passenger aboard. Airport officials say it was an Alert 2, which is precautionary.

Forest Service Hosting Town Hall Tonight

Tonight, the Texas Forest Service is holding a town hall meeting in Christoval about how to protect your home, property and family from wildfire. It starts at 7pm in the Christoval Community Center.

Paco's Place will be Closed for Repairs

Paco’s Place Mexican Restaurant on Harris Avenue is going to be closed two to four weeks, because a vehicle crashed into the building, last Friday, causing close to one hundred thousand dollars in damage. 26 year old Brandon Shannon told police he lost control of the car he was driving south on Bell Street. He hit a street sign, then a traffic control box, then crashed into the restaurant.

Howard College Fire Causes Classes to be Cancelled

Classes are back in session at Howard College and the West Texas Training Center. This morning, an air handler on the campus over heated and caught fire, just before 7, and classes were cancelled.

Texas Legislators Pass Medicaid Reform

The Texas legislature passed a Medicaid reform bill today that allows the state to enter into a health care compact with other states.

Tom Green County will Require All Seeking Indigent Health Care to Prove Residency

The Tom Green County Commission voted to require all people seeking indigent health care to have a Photo ID or proof that they’ve applied for one, with a Tom Green County address on it. The rules will also state they have to be a resident in the County for 90 days.

San Angelo City Council Members Not Supportive of Towing and Impoundment Idea

The San Angelo Police Department asked City Council members to consider establishing a city run towing and impoundment operation. Councilman Fredd Adams had asked city staff to investigate revenues the city could earn from the project. The rest of the council was divided on the idea, and the issue was tabled for future consideration.

Wildfire is Now Contained in Coke County

The Texas Forest service says the White Hat wildfire is contained in Coke County. It burned 72-thousand 500 acres south of Maryneal.

Elevated Fire Weather Conditions Today

The National Weather Service reports elevated fire weather conditions in the Concho Valley, due to the low relative humidity combined with southeast winds.

ASU has a New ROTC Commander

Angelo State University’s new commander of the ROTC Detachment 847 is Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Magnan. He’s an ASU ROTC graduate who has earned the Meritorious Service Medal, with five oak leaf clusters. His last assignment was in New Mexico. He replaces Colonel Mike Buck, who retired.

San Angelo's Most Wanted: Find Delfino Hill

Can you help Crime Stoppers find San Angelo's Most Wanted? Police are looking for 24 year old Delfino Hill, also known as Delfino Gonzales. His last known address was in the 500 block of North Bell Street. He's wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Hill is described as five foot seven, 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo of a cross on his left hand and a grim reaper on his back. 2 Men Hurt in Crash on South Bryant and Old Knickerbocker Friday

San Angelo police report two men were injured, Friday night, in an accident on South Bryant Boulevard and Old Knickerbocker Road. Police say 59 year old Felix Zapata was headed west on Old Knickerbocker and failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign, pulling out in front of an SUV driven by 65 year old James Young, who ended up with serious injuries, in the crash. Zapata was charged with intoxication assault with a vehicle.

San Angelo City Council Takes on Water Issues

Tomorrow, San Angelo City Council members will consider adopting an ordinance that would annex about 200 acres of land southwest of the existing city limits, including the Lake Nasworthy Power Station, an adjacent electric substation, some land with electric power transmission lines and a segment of right of way for Red Bluff Road. Council members will also discuss where water from the Hickory Aquifer Water Development Project should be treated. The Council meets tomorrow morning at nine in the McNease Convention Center.

Heat Advisory in Effect

A heat advisory is in effect. The National Weather Service says heat index values are above 105 degrees. Sunstroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are all possible with too much exposure or physical activity outdoors.
In addition, there are elevated fire weather conditions in the Concho Valley, due to the hot temperatures combined with some gusty south winds. A burn ban remains in effect. Don’t idle cars near dry grass or have chains dragging, when you drive. Use only weed trimmers, not mowers on tall dry grass.

White Hat Wildfire Update Monday

The White Hat wildfire continues to burn in Coke County. It’s just south of Maryneal and has burned over 72-thousand acres. Crews say it’s 95 percent contained, but with the current weather conditions, they’re not taking any chances.

Some Fun Things to Do this Weekend

Camp Rock the Musical opens tonight at the Coliseum. Tomorrow, the Concho Valley CARES Coalition teen committee is having a brisket sandwich fundraiser. From 10:30-1:30 at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council for the Concho Valley.

Meals for the Elderly is also a FAN of the Elderly

Meals for the Elderly is collecting fans for local homebound seniors. Ten area businesses are competing to see which can earn the title of greatest “fan.” They have drop sites, for the next two weeks. And, on July 1st, Ace Westlake Hardware will have specially priced fans at a final drop off site from 9am-1pm.

ASU Raising Tuition While Experiencing Record Summer Enrollment

Angelo State University is raising tuition for the 2011 2012 school year, by almost ten percent. The average price for a full time student jumps about 330 dollars a semester.
Meantime, the University reports that graduate enrollment in the first summer session rose more than 25 percent over the same session last year. A-S-U is experiencing the highest summer graduate enrollment ever.

Warehouse Fire Downtown Causes Thousands of Dollars in Damages


A building that used to be a Coca-cola bottling plant and warehouse caught fire, yesterday at First Street and North Chadbourne Avenue. Traffic had to be redirected, and the scene drew quite a crowd. Battalion Chief Royce Owen says faulty electrical wiring started the blaze. He did not think anyone was inside when the fire began. Damage is estimated at about 5-thousand dollars.

White Hat Fire Still Threatening Maryneal

The White Hat Fire continues to burn near Maryneal, about 15 miles south of Sweetwater. The Texas Forest Service says voluntary evacuations are still in effect for people in Maryneal. The most dangerous part of the fire is just four miles south of the community. The fire has burned over 71-thousand acres, has destroyed 16 structures and is now 75 percent contained.

Fire Weather Conditions

Expect elevated fire weather conditions, this weekend. This afternoon, it’s mainly west of a line from Haskell to Anson to Blackwell.

Afternoon sports headlines

The Colts swept a doubleheader from Rio Grande Valley at Harlingen last night, 2 to 1 and 3 to 1. They finally squeezed the games in after rain delays and postponements. This moved the Colts into a tie with the White Wings for first place in the South Division of the North American League. The Colts are back home tonight, again facing the White Wings. Game time is 7:05.

The Rangers and Astros were both off last night. The Rangers have a weekend series with the Mets at home, and the Astros are home against the Rays.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban promised that he would pay for the parade celebrating the team's NBA Championship--and the city of Dallas has totaled up the bill: 341-thousand dollars.

Fans who were in Dallas for the Super Bowl in February and didn't get seats because they were deemed unsafe at the last minute, are suing. Court documents filed this week seek lost income on top of other expenses they incurred.

Afternoon sports headlines

The San Angelo Colts have been doing a lot of waiting in the past two days...waiting out rain. Last night's game at Harlingen against the Rio Grande Valley White Wings was rained out, and there was a double header scheduled for today. The first game has already been rained out. They'll try to squeeze in both games tonight, with the first one scheduled for 5:30. Both games will be seven innings.

This weekend the Colts are back at home against the White Wings, in a Friday through Monday series.

The Rangers are up two games to one in the first half of the Lone Star Series against the Astros. Both teams are off today, then the Rangers host the Mets tomorrow while the Astros head back to Houston to host the Rays in a weekend series.

Wall High School finished third in the Class 2A University Interscholastic League Lone Star Cup standings for the 2010-11 school year. The standings are based on team performance in district and state championships in both athletics and academics.


Wildfires Update: Power Out in Maryneal

The Texas Forest Service reports the Wilson Ranch Wildfire is contained. Over four thousand acres burned, but crews are just mopping up. In Coke and Nolan counties, though, the White Hat wildfire is causing more problems. Nearly 71-thousand acres have burned. It’s reported to be 65-percent contained. But, there are still voluntary evacuations around the community of Maryneal. The fire is just four miles south of there. And, a power substation received heavy damage, since yesterday, and thousands of people are without power. The Forest Service says eight homes, eight outbuildings and three vehicles were destroyed. They’re using heavy airtankers to drop suppressant on the fire, trying to prevent any more property damage.

Cattle Raisers Ask Congress for More Help Recovering from Wildfires

The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association appeared before Congress to discuss the toll of the Texas wildfires, yesterday. Joe Parker, Junior asked the Administration to issue a Major Disaster Declaration for the state of Texas to help bring additional assistance to firefighters. He also wants the age requirement removed for ranchers to be eligible for the USDA’s fence rebuilding cost share assistance, in case of natural disaster.

Crime Stoppers: Most Wanted is in Custody

Crime Stoppers reports another of San Angelo’s Most Wanted is now in custody. We told you about Jonathan Luna, just last week. Tips came in about Luna’s whereabouts, and officers arrested him, this week. He was wanted for a hit and run involving injury and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

Town Hall Meeting About South Concho Drive Tonight

San Angelo has a town hall meeting tonight for anyone who wants to discuss the condition of South Concho Drive. Some city representatives will be there, at the Pecan Creek Pavilion on Country Club Road, starting at 7pm.

Goodfellow Air Force Base Command Turned over to Damiano

Goodfellow Air Force Base has a new commander. Colonel Thomas Geary handed command over to Colonel Mark Damiano in an hour long ceremony, this morning. About three hundred personnel from all branches of the military passed in review. Damiano has been at Fort Meade in Maryland. Geary is going to the National Security Agency and Central Security Service in San Antonio.

Storms Possible Again Tonight and Tomorrow

The National Weather Service says storms are possible again, tonight and tomorrow. Most likely roughly south of a line from Ozona to Richland Springs. There’s potential for dangerous cloud to ground lightning and heavy rainfall.

Latest on Area Wildfires from Texas Forest Service

Fire crews can use some rain in Coke and Nolan Counties, where the White Hat wildfire continues to burn. The Texas Forest Service reports 42-thousand acres have burned. It’s 30 percent contained. They’re dropping water and chemicals with heavy airtankers, four miles south of Maryneal, and there have been some voluntary evacuations in the area.
The Wilson Ranch fire is now 95 percent contained. 42-hundred acres burned, north of Grape Creek.

Tom Green County Commissioners Court Discusses Burn Ban

The Tom Green County Commissioners Court voted to leave the burn ban in effect. Weather conditions have not changed enough to lift the restrictions.

Tom Green County Takes in Abused Horses, Seeking Help

The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office has taken in 16 horses found to be in deplorable conditions in Christoval, last week. Deputies took them to a county 4-H facility. Some are yearlings. One has a hole in its neck that caused an infection. The Sheriff’s Department had to get approval from the Commissioners Court to accept donations, yesterday, as hay, feed and veterinarian expenses shot up to 13-hundred dollars. Monetary donations go to the Tom Green County Treasurer, with a memo of Animals. The Tom Green County Extension Office can take feed donations. Charges may be filed for animal cruelty. There’s a hearing tomorrow.

Jury finds San Marcos Man Not Guilty of Aggravated Robbery from his Father's Widow

The jury found Joseph Lee of San Marcos not guilty of aggravated robbery, last night, after about an hour of deliberation. Lee was accused of stealing guns from his father’s widow, with the help of an armed accomplice. The guns and other property were in dispute, after his father died.

Amazon.com Offering Texas a Deal

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs has been campaigning for lawmakers to pass a measure that would for online retailers, like Amazon.com, to pay sales tax to the state. Reports out of Austin say the company is negotiating a deal with Texas officials that would give Amazon a four and a half year exemption on from sales tax, and in return, the company would create more than 5000 jobs and invest 300 million dollars in the state over the next three years.

Aerial Spraying for Invasive Plants at Twin Buttes

The Upper Colorado River Authority is starting aerial treatment of invasive vegetation, today, at Twin Buttes Reservoir. The public will not be allowed in the areas where crews are spraying, and some camping areas and trails may be closed during the application processa, over the next few days. Killing off some of the plants helps stream flows and groundwater levels.

San Angelo Schools Hold Town Hall Meeting on Federal Programs Tonight

The San Angelo Board of Education has voted to eliminate the 20 percent local optional homestead exemption on the school portion of property tax. That change is not going to take effect until tax bills in 2013. The vote was six to one.
There will be a Town Hall Meeting tonight at 5:30pm in the School District Administration Building Break Room. The Executive Director of Federal Programs and Academic Initiatives will be talking about the Title 1 Budget and funds distribution, migrant budget and community impact.

Severe Weather: Red Flag Warning, Storms, Wind Advisory

A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 10pm. Critical Fire Danger. Avoid all outside activities that may produce sparks and dispose of cigarettes and all flammables, carefully. There’s a chance of severe thunderstorms tonight. The main threats are damaging downburst winds and hail. And, a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect until 7pm.

Wildfires Reported NW of San Angelo and in Christoval

Fire crews are on the scene of a wildfire that started about midnight in Christoval. Residents near the blaze, in the 2400 block of Toe Nail Trail were informed that they might need to evacuate. It started by the side of the road, near the Schleicher County line, and the winds blew the smoke into San Angelo, this morning.
The Texas Forest Service says lightning caused a wildfire that started about 34 miles northwest of San Angelo, around 8:30, last night. It’s been contained, as well.

Vehicle Burglaries in Unlocked Cars Reported in San Angelo

The San Angelo Police have received a rash of vehicle burglary reports, since late last week. In most of the cases, the vehicles were unlocked. They were in the 2400 block of West Harris and 25-hundred block of Live Oak. Police are urging everyone to secure property in your vehicles. Hide your things, lock your car, take your keys.

San Angelo School Board Takes Up Homestead Exemption Tonight

The San Angelo school board meets tonight and will likely vote on reducing the local optional homestead exemption. If approved, it will take at least a year before property owners see a change in their tax bills. And, district officials say the bills might actually be lower, because they’re reducing the tax rate.

Fire Weather, Heat Advisory, Thunderstorms

The National Weather Service says critical fire weather conditions will continue, with strong winds, low relative humidities and extremely hot temperatures. Isolated thunderstorms are possible, this evening, along a dryline from San Angelo to Throckmorton. The storms could have gusty winds and dangerous cloud to ground lightning.

In addition, a heat advisory is in effect until 10pm. If you must spend time outside, drink plenty of water and try to take breaks in air conditioning. Prolonged exposure or physical activity could lead to sunstroke, heat cramps or heat exhaustion.

San Angelo Family Dies in Fiery Car Crash Near Mertzon

A family of four from San Angelo died in a tragic car accident near Mertzon, last night. 21 year old Daniel Gonzales, 21 year old Jasmine Gonzales, 6 year old Emori Gonzales and 2 year old Kierra Smith were traveling north on U-S 67 about 11pm. 60 year old Glen Hodges of Fort Stockton was driving southbound and fell asleep at the wheel, crossing the center line and striking the Gonzales car head on.

Governor Perry Scheduled to Have Surgery

Governor Rick Perry is going to have minor surgery to deal with a recurring back injury. It’s scheduled for July 1st. Tomorrow, he speaks at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans.

Executive Director of the San Angelo Symphony Resigns

The Executive Director of the San Angelo Symphony has resigned. In a statement, Charlotte Lewis said the Board of Directors expressed their desire to move in another direction, so she submitted her resignation per their request. She’d been with the Symphony as Executive Director for two years.

This Weekend: Boxing, Juneteenth Events

The Concho Boxing Club’s Father’s Day Boxing Bash is tomorrow, starting at 6:30 pm at the Tom Green County 4-H Building on U-S 67 North.

The Juneteenth celebration starts early, with a Parade tomorrow at 10am. The Freedom Revisited concert event is at 2pm Sunday. The Miracle on 18th Street worship ministry will have a musical celebration at the Museum of Fine Arts. It’s a free event, open to everyone.

Red Flag Warning in Effect Until 9pm Thursday

A Red Flag Warning is in Effect, until 9 o’clock. The National Weather Service says a tightening pressure gradient is going to allow winds to become strong again. Critical fire weather conditions with the low relative humidity, west of a line from Throckmorton to Ballinger to San Angelo. Temperatures this afternoon in combination with the other conditions will create explosive fire growth potential. Be careful with all flammables. Don’t park your car or let it idle in grassy vegetation.

Tom Green County Budget Talks

Tom Green County Commissioners keep working their way through the budget process. Last year at this time, they were looking at a one million dollar shortfall. This year, the gap between projected expenses and revenues is around 200-thousand dollars. Big ticket items up for discussion, this week, were health insurance, which costs the county around 900-thousand dollars, and the Stephens Central Library, mainly because of a big drop in state funding.

Eldorado Track Star Dies

A young man who ran track for Eldorado High School and just graduated has died. The Texas Department of Public Safety says 19 year old Jorge Medrano was jogging across North Divide in Eldorado about 10pm one week ago, when a pickup heading to San Angelo on U-S 277 struck him. Medrano suffered a head injury, hip injury and internal bleeding. No word on whether charges will be filed.

Billie Dunn gets Probation, Moves to Austin

The mother of missing teenager Hailey Dunn was sentenced to one year of probation yesterday. Billie Dunn pleaded no contest to making a false report to authorities. Other charges were dropped, as part of the agreement. She was arrested in March for lying to police about where her boyfriend was. Shawn Adkins remains the only suspect in the disappearance of 13 year old Hailey, last seen on December 27th. Billie Dunn has moved from Colorado City to the Austin area and will serve her probation there.

Train Your Dog to Perform Therapy... for Free!

The Humane Society of Tom Green County will train your dog to be a healer. The free training classes are from six to seven pm Wednesday at the Humane Society inside Sunset Mall. The classes prepare pets and their handlers for the Therapy Dog International Test.

Afternoon sports headlines

The San Angelo Colts saw their four-game losing streak come to an end at home last night in a 6 to 4 loss to Edinburg. The Colts and Roadrunners play again tonight at 7:05.

A former member of the Angelo State baseball team makes his major league debut today. 24-year-old Zach Stewart, who also played for Texas Tech, will be the starting pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays as they host the Baltimore Orioles.

After wrapping up this series with the Yankees today, the Rangers have one more road series before heading back home. This one is in Atlanta this weekend and marks the end of a 10-game road trip for Texas. After today's matinee with the Pirates, the Astros head to LA to face the Dodgers.


The Dallas Mavericks just celebrated their first NBA title this morning along with a couple hundred thousand of their closest friends in the victory parade. It's been a week long celebration since winning the title over Miami Sunday night. Guard DeShawn Stevenson was was arrested Tuesday night in Irving for public intoxication.

Musical Offices While County Completes Waterproofing Project

Tom Green County Commissioners are working out how employees are going to deal with the Courthouse waterproofing project, specifically those who work in the building’s basement. They will have to move for six months or more, while contractors finish the job. Exterior waterproofing is already complete. Some offices will move to the former library space on the first floor of the Edd B Keyes Building, others to an empty building on North Bryant. Warren Jeffs Trial to Stay in San Angelo

The sexual assault trial for Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs will begin on July 25th in San Angelo. In a pre-trial hearing yesterday, 51st District Judge Barbara Walther moved the trial from Schleicker County, over the objection of defense attorneys, who want the case heard outside of Walther’s District.

Texas House Passes Redistricting Measure

The Texas House approved a redistricting map, 93-48, yesterday. It’s very close to the one approved earlier this week, by the Senate. The biggest change is in Travis County, which gets divided into 5 congressional districts.

Sanctuary Cities Bill Passes State Senate

Last night, State Senators approved a bill that would forbid local governments from having policies in place that prevent officers from enforcing immigration laws. Governor Rick Perry had labeled the so called sanctuary city bill a priority, before the start of the last legislative session. This measure would require the name of everyone arrested and everyone seeking a driver’s license to be run through federal immigration databases.

What are Texans Worried About?

Texans now have a greater concern than immigration and the economy. A new poll from the independent group Texas Lyceum shows that education is the biggest concern of residents around the state.

Elections Office Looking for Voter Registration Volunteers

The Tom Green County Election Office is looking for volunteers to help with voter registration. There’s a training session, tomorrow at 2pm on the second floor of the Edd B Keyes Building on Beauregard. The training last about one hour. Deputy registrars are required to attend.

The San Angelo Colts continue their homestand tonight, kicking off a four-game series against the Edinburg Roadrunners starting at 7:05. The Colts just completed a four-game sweep of Rio Grande Valley and now trail the White Wings by just one game in the South Division of the North American League.

The 38th annual Angelo Football Clinic started today and lasts through Friday at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. Six directors including former Cowboys coach Wade Phillips are putting on the clinic, and about a thousand coaches are expected to attend.

The Dallas Mavericks have announced plans for the parade celebrating their NBA Championship. It will start tomorrow morning at 10 at the Dallas Convention Center and finish up at the American Airlines Center. Players, coaches and front officer personnel will participate. A crowd of 250-thousand is expected along the parade route.

The Rangers will try again in New York tonight after a loss last night to the Yankees. The Astros are home against Pittsburgh after a loss last night.

Near Critical Fire Weather Today - Precautions

The National Weather Service says we will continue to have near critical fire weather for the next several days, generally west of a line from Throckmorton, to Abilene to Ozona. If spending any time outdoors, take care to keep yourself hydrated. And, use extra caution to prevent accidental wildfire starts. Use string trimmers, not mowers on tall dry grass, and don’t park vehicles near dry grass.

Dos Amigos Wildfire Update Tuesday PM


The Texas Forest Service says the Dos Amigos Wildfire is 90 percent contained. Crews are just continuing to mop up and make sure lines are holding. The fire started last week and burned through over 19-thousand acres. 17 Travel Trailers and one motor home were destroyed.

Motion to Remove Judge from Warren Jeffs Trial Denied

Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs is still scheduled to be tried on charges of sexual assault of a child and bigamy on July 25th. He was in court today. State District Judge John Hyde of Midland denied a motion by Jeffs’ attorney to remove 51st District Judge Barbara Walther from the case. That ruling allowed his pre-trial motion hearing to proceed. Jeffs’ attorney wants more time to prepare to represent the head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

State Senate Passes Two Bills Dealing with Education

State Senators passed two education bills, yesterday. One would improve access to electronic courses for public school students and streamline the process of getting the classes approved by the state. The other allows charter schools that are deemed “financially strong” to have the backing of the Permanent School Fund, when they’re trying to issue bonds to pay for new classrooms and facilities. Both measures are on to the House.

Civil Rights Group Files Suit against Texas Pre-abortion Sonogram Law

A New York group is filing a lawsuit that challenges the new law in Texas that requires pre-abortion sonograms. The Center for Reproductive Rights filed a class action suit in U-S District Court in Austin, arguing the law improperly forces doctors to deliver government mandated speech when describing the fetal features to the patient and treats women as less than competent adults.

Afternoon sports headlines

The Dallas Mavericks have the first NBA title in franchise history, It came with a 4-2 series win over the Miami Heat. Dirk Nowitzki was named MVP and has that championship to go with a great career.

The San Angelo Colts had a much better time against the White Wings this weekend. After losing a series to them last week at Harlingen, the Colts won all three games this weekend and will try to complete a four-game sweep tonight.

The Rangers have a day off in New York today as they get ready to play the Yankees tomorrow. What's Josh Hamilton doing with a day off in New York? Watch for him on the David Letterman show tonight.

The annual Angelo Football Clinic is happening this week. The golf tournament in honor of former SAISD athletic director, Doug McCutchen is tomorrow at Bentwood Country Club. All proceeds go toward athletics at SAISD, and many coaches from across the state will play honor of McCutchen who died in February.

San Angelo's Most Wanted This Week

Crime Stoppers wants your help tracking down San Angelo’s Most Wanted. 19 year old Pablo Fraire is described as five foot six, 140 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo of a name on his left hand and other ink on his left arm. Fraire is wanted for burglary of a vehicle and deadly conduct with discharge of a firearm. His last known address was in the 100 block of East 12th Street. Tips can be anonymous at 658-HELP.

Dos Amigos Wildfire Update

Fire crews were able to make some headway against the Dos Amigos wildfire, this weekend. Coke County Sheriff’s Department says firefighters are continuing to mop up hot spots, today. All the volunteer fire departments had left the scene, by yesterday morning. The Texas Forest Service remains at the site, making sure nothing else flares, in the heat today. The fire started Wednesday at the Dos Amigos Ranch, just south of State Highway 158 and quickly burned through more than 19-thousand acres. It’s now near 90 percent contained.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for counties west of a line from Albany to Junction, today. And, the National Weather Service expects elevated fire weather conditions to continue through Saturday.

Dos Amigos Fire has Consumed 85 Hundred Acres

The Dos Amigos wildfire is raging in rough terrain, 15 miles west of Robert Lee. It has consumed 85-hundred acres so far, but firefighters have battled it on the ground and in the air and the Texas Forest Service now reports it’s 40 percent contained.

Purdie Clark a Person of Interest in Collin County Case

34 year old Purdie Clark pleaded guilty to murdering 60 year old Bud Phillips in San Angelo, on June 1st. She was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the 2009 killing. Phillips ate ice cream laced with strychnine. Now, sheriff’s department investigators in Collin County say they’re looking hard at Clark for the 2006 shooting death of her husband, at that time, 42 year old Kim Clark. He was shot twice in the head and left in a rural area. Another suspect was 24 year old Robert Murphy, who was a live in nanny for the Clark family and had a relationship with Purdie Clark. He was found dead in a San Angelo motel one month after Clark’s body was discovered.

Perry Politicos Quit Gingrich Campaign, Fuel Perry Presidential Run Rumors

Governor Rick Perry has said he’s considering a White House bid. Today a number of high level staffers and advisors quit the presidential campaign of Newt Gingrich. Two of them, Rob Johnson and Dave Carney, were previously on Perry’s political team.

Veterans Groups Commemorate Flag Day Sunday

Flag Day is Tuesday, but area veteran’s organizations will have an event Sunday, starting at 2pm. There will be a color guard presentation, and the public is invited to attend, at the Elks Lodge 1880 on South Chadbourne Street.

Comptroller Certifies State Budget

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs says Texas will have enough money to cover the budget for 2012-2013. Now that it’s certified, House Bill 1 goes to Governor Rick Perry’s desk. He has until June19 to decide whether to sign it.

The Texas Forest Service used an air attack to drop chemicals on the blaze, because it was hard for firefighters on the ground to reach some spots in the hills. The blaze has now burned 6000 acres and the Texas Forest Service says it’s 20 percent contained.

Afternoon sports headlines

Lebron James with just 8 points? Dirk Nowitzki fought off the flu and scored 21 for the Mavericks in another come from behind win for Dallas, 86-83 last night. The series is tied 2 games each with Game 5 tomorrow night in Dallas, then the series moves back to Miami.

The San Angelo Colts were in Harlingen last night. Ronnie Gaines singled in two runs in the seventh and extended his hitting streak to 13 games, but it wasn't enough as the Colts wound up losing to Rio Grande Valley, 3 to 2. San Angelo takes on the White Wings again tonight.

The Colts signed two players and placed another two on the in active list. Infielder Austin Lasprilla and outfielder Jareck West were placed on the inactive list, and the Colts signed infielder Eddie Browne and left-handed pitcher Cory Patton.


At Arlington, Detroit banged out 20 hits en route to an 8 to 1 pounding of the Rangers. The Astros have lost four in a row; they got beat by St. Louis, 7 to 4 at Houston.

Synthetic Marijuana Seized in San Angelo Undercover Operation

The San Angelo Police ran an undercover operation and determined that three local businesses were selling synthetic marijuana, which is a violation of a city ordinance that went into effect, last December. Officers seized 238 bags of the product and issued citations at Smokers Outlet on Southwest Boulevard, Smokers Outlet on North Chadbourne and New Era on Sherwood Way.

San Angelo School Board Will Discuss Reducing the Local Homestead Exemption

Tomorrow, the San Angelo school board has a special meeting set for 5:30 to discuss a proposal which would reduce the local optional homestead exemption and other financial issues, based on the expected shortfall in state funding. The meeting is in the board room of the school district administration building and is open to the public.

Tom Green County Commission Agrees to Continue Participating in Crime Victim Service

Tom Green County Commissioners met yesterday, and in addition to banning fireworks through July fifth, they agreed to continue participating in a program that informs crime victims about the trial or jail status of someone accused or convicted of a crime against them.

Interest Rate on Hickory Aquifer Loan Helps City

In yesterday’s meeting, Council members learned the interest rate on the loan for the Hickory Aquifer project is going to be set at one point three five percent, rather than two percent, which will save the city tens of millions of dollars over the course of the loan. The Council discussed the city’s Capital Improvement Plan and what items on it should take precedence, over the next five years. And, they approved the purchase of mechanical equipment for the City Hall’s heating and cooling plant, at a cost of just under 500-thousand dollars.

Red Arroyo Bike Trail Gets Funding

The City of San Angelo is getting a three point two million dollar grant from the Texas Department of Transportation for a new bike path. It’s a three point seven mile concrete trail through the Red Arroyo, which will connect Knickerbocker Road to Sherwood Way. City Council members approved accepting the grant money, even though they hadn’t earmarked the 20 percent in local matching funds required. Upon recommendation by city staff members, they agreed to reallocate up to 500-thousand dollars from the city stormwater department budget and around 300-thousand dollars from half cent sales dollars that was to be used for South Concho Park.

Fireworks Banned in Tom Green County Until at Least July 5th

Tom Green County Commissioners have banned the sale and use of consumer fireworks, until July 5th in unincorporated areas, as part of a disaster declaration to prevent more wildfires.

San Angelo City Council Approves Annexation of Land SW of City

The San Angelo City Council approved the annexation of 200 acres of land southwest of the city limits, today. That includes the Lake Nasworthy Power Station on Knickerbocker Road. Council members voted unanimously to approve allowing the city to issue dept on the Hickory Aquifer project. And, a resolution to bid out construction of the pipeline before the city closes on a 120 million dollar low interest loan was approved, 4-2.

Police Urge Senior Citizens to be Aware of Grandparent Scam

San Angelo police report a local senior got a call from someone claiming to be her grandson. The person said they were in Canada and had been arrested and needed money wired to be released. They then gave the phone to someone claiming to be a Canadian police officer who had details on the money transfer but would not provide a contact number. This is a scam. Police urge you to inform elderly friends or family members about it, because the criminals are good a playing on emotions.

Texas State Senate Approves Redistricting Map and School Measure

In the State Legislature, Senators approved a final version of the redistricting plan for Texas. It creates four new congressional districts, one in Arlington, one in South Texas, one between San Antonio and Austin and one east of Houston. The proposal is headed to the House.

Senators also passed a measure that gives school districts new authority to lower teachers’ pay and require unpaid furloughs.

Governor Rick Perry Calls for Day of Prayer and Fasting for USA

Governor Rick Perry has announced a prayer and fasting event in Houston. It’s called The Response, and it’s described as a non denominational, apolitical, Christian prayer meeting at Reliant Stadium on August 6th. He’s invited all the other governors in the country to attend and pray for the country.

The San Angelo Colts have won five of their last six after starting the seaon 1-6. They'll try to stay hot tonight on the road against the Rio Grande Valley White Wings. It's a four game series, and the Colts will play that same team again this weekend in another four game series at home.

Two of Angelo State’s student-athletes, have been named Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete Award winners. Alix Dean was honored in softball and Brian Holik in men's track. Dean was a two-time All-American and hit .366 over her career. Holik was an All-American six times in track including a fifth-place finish as part of 1,600 meter relay team last month.

The Lake View softball team has three Maidens on the first-team all-district--Tori Holsey, Natalie Flores, and Amanda Ramage.

It's a big night for the Mavericks, trying to even the NBA Finals series with the Heat. Miami leads 2-1 with tip off in Game 4 at 7pm from Dallas.

San Angelo City Council Talks Garage Sales, Alcohol on the Streets, Tomorrow

The San Angelo City Council may tweak the garage sale ordinance again tomorrow. They’re going to have a public hearing and second reading for an ordinance that raises the maximum number of garage sales you’re allowed to have on a residential site to three per year.

Members will also have first public hearing and consider an ordinance that would allow visitors to carry alcoholic beverages at the Sports Complex and 29th Street Recreation Area. They will discuss whether to issue Surplus Revenue Certificates for some capital improvement projects, like for parks, trails, the Fairgrounds and the study and design of the Visitor’s Center. And, there are resolutions on the agenda that deal with water system improvement projects.

The San Angelo Police Department is looking for information about 28 year old Samuel Sutton. He’s wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two city warrants. His last known address was in the 200 block of South Oakes Street, but he’s been tracked to motels. Sutton is described as five foot seven, 197 pounds, black hair, brown eyes. State Legislature Takes Up Smoking Ban

One of the new measures introduced during the State Legislature’s special session would ban smoking inside public places that require a state license to operate, like bars and restaurants. The House approved the bill, and it’s headed to the Senate.

San Angelo Civic Ballet Awards Susan Templeton Kinney Spring Gift

The San Angelo Civic Ballet has awarded the Susan Templeton Kinney Spring Gift to Angelica Ybarra. It's a 500 dollar scholarship given to a level four student to be used toward their professional dance aspirations. The San Angelo Colts were winners last night against McAllen, and after a rough start that moves the Colts' record to 6-6. They're off tonight and start a road series tomorrow at the Rio Grande Valley White Wings. That series ends with a double header on Thursday. The Colts actually play the White Wings eight times in six days. The White Wings visit the Colts to start a new series Friday night.

Texas' Major League Baseball teams are on two different streaks right now. The Rangers are winners of five in a row, having swept the Indians over the weekend. They kick off a short home stand tonight against the Detroit Tigers. The Astros meanwhile have lost three in a row. They're off tonight and start a series with the Cardinals tomorrow at home.

Saturday Clay Shoot Benefits Meals for the Elderly

The San Angelo Claybird Association is hosting its annual Sporting Clay Shoot, tomorrow, starting at 7am. Registration includes breakfast, lunch and a rotation of 100 targets, with raffles and prizes. And, the money raised will help Meals for the Elderly, which is having some tough times due to high gas prices, this spring.

San Angelo Police Looking for Help Solving Criminal Damage at Museum of Fine Arts

San Angelo police are looking for information about damage done to a stone sculpture that was broken at the Museum of Fine Arts building, last week. The piece was a tall, linear statue made from Indiana Limestone, valued at 17-thousand dollars, and it was on loan to the museum. Someone knocked it over, overnight May 26th or 27th. Pink Bat Night at the Colts Game Tonight for American Cancer Society Fundraiser

Tonight, if you’re going to the Colts game, you’re encouraged to wear pink. The American Cancer Society is hosting Pink Bat Night. The colts players will be using pink bats during the game, and after, they will all be auctioned off for A-C-S. The game starts at 7:05.

Leadership San Angelo Graduation Party Tonight

The Leadership San Angelo Alumni Association will celebrate the 28th graduating class of Leadership San Angelo tonight, with a party at the Rio Concho West Recreation Center. It starts at six o’clock. The group will also name the Leadership San Angelo Bob Diebitsch Alumni Leader of the Year Award winner.

Kids Eat Summer Meals Now Available at Various Sites

Children can get a free nutritious breakfast and lunch, all month, from the Kids Eat Summer Meals Initiative. Breakfast is from 7:30 to 8:15, lunch is from 11:15-1pm, and the meals are free to kids between the ages of 1 and 18. Parents, grandparents and caregivers who want to eat with the kids pay less than three dollars a meal. The program is at a number of San Angelo and Grape Creek Schools, as well as Boys and Girls Club sites and some local Churches.

Man Wanted in Tom Green County for Forgery Facing More Serious Charges in Ector County

A Dallas man wanted for forgery and theft in Tom Green County is going on trial for shooting at two police officers during a drug bust last year. 28 year old Wesley Knight is being held in Ector County on the attempted capital murder charges. The trial is set for October.

Airport Renovation Firm Ready to Remake the Look of Mathis Field

Corgan Associates and KSA Engineering announced they’re set to start the four point nine million dollar renovation project at the San Angelo Regional Airport. There will be upgrades to the terminal building entrance and expansion of the passageway from the main lobby to the baggage claim. A wall is going to be replaced with glass, so people can view the concourse, and crews will replace the façade, which dates back to 1955, with a more contemporary look, like at the terminal. The project will be ongoing through 2013.

Donate New or Gently Used Shoes to Christian Faith Center

Christian Faith Center is collecting new or gently worn footwear, or even donations to provide the gift of shoes, all month, as part of the Soles4Souls 11 in 11 Campaign. The organization wants to distribute 11 million pairs of shoes, this year, to people living in poverty and recovering from natural disasters. Free Asthma Camp Registration Deadline Tomorrow

Tom Green County Gives Thumbs Up to Western Towers

Tom Green County Commissioners approved a permit for Western Towers to begin building a new manufacturing plant near Harriet. The owners of Western Towers say they already have four years worth of orders for a tilting tower they make for the railroad industry. They already broke ground for the project and hope to be up and running with 10-15 new employees in the fall. They’re committed to hiring wounded war veterans for one fifth of the workforce.

American Eagle Adding 4th Flight Back Again for Start of School Year

American Eagle says the reduction to three flights a day from Mathis Field to Dallas Fort Worth will be a temporary thing. The company is the sole commercial airline with regular flights to San Angelo, but the decision was made to cut one flight per day, starting June 9, because of high fuel costs. The fourth daily flight will be back, starting August 23rd and continue through Christmas.

The National Weather Service says elevated fire weather conditions will continue for the rest of the afternoon and evening, mainly west of a Sweetwater to San Angelo to Ozona line. It’s the wind, combined with falling humidities today.
