Governor Vetoes So-Called Amazon Bill

Governor Rick Perry vetoed a bill that was aimed at tightening the state’s rules on when online retailers must collect taxes on transactions.

USAF Tops in Blue Free Show at Coliseum Wednesday Night

The United States Air Force is presenting Tops in Blue, a free stage show with active duty airmen performing at the Coliseum tomorrow night at seven o’clock.

State Legislature Returns for Special Session, Schedules Votes for Later in Week

State lawmakers returned for a special session of the legislature, expected to take up measures on school funding and Medicaid. House and Senate leaders did submit a new proposal on congressional redistricting. The House adjourned after about ten minutes, with Speaker Joe Straus announcing he needed a special session schedule. They’ll be back in session tomorrow morning. The Senate has adjourned until Thursday afternoon.

San Angelo Woman Dies in Crash North of Menard, Two Others Seriously Injured

A 63 year old San Angelo woman is dead, two others have serious injuries, after a one vehicle crash on U-S 83, about 10 miles north of Menard. Police say Karen Phelps was a passenger in an SUV driven by 58 year old Vicky Parum. About 2, yesterday afternoon, police say Parum was towing a flatbed trailer, when she drove off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected to the left, swerving again to the right and rolling the vehicle. 59 year old Donald Parum was in the backseat and was also hurt. None of them were wearing seat belts.

San Angelo Police Find Man on Roof of Medical Arts Pharmacy After Burglary

San Angelo police arrested 22 year old Casey Johnson, Sunday, and he’s accused of burglary. Officers responded to an alarm about two am and found someone had broken into the Medical Arts Pharmacy on Pecos Street. Their search turned up Johnson, hiding on the roof of the building with medicine.

Fire Fund Gets a Big Matching Boost From Local Foundations

Volunteer Fire departments are getting a big boost, in the Concho Valley. The San Angelo Health Foundation and San Angelo Area Foundation created the Fire Fund, in April. Contributions from individuals and organizations topped 92-thousand dollars. Today, the Foundations announced the donations were matched. Different departments have different needs, ranging from tires, to truck repairs to fuel. So, a total of 184-thousand dollars will be distributed in amounts from one to ten thousand dollars.

The San Angelo Colts will try again, hoping to right the ship. They lost their third game in a row last night, dropping a 4 to 2 decision at Edinburg. The Colts' runs came on back to back homers in the seventh inning by Landon Camp and Mark Ramos. San Angelo is now one and five on the season and continues the series against the Roadrunners tonight.

The Astros are at the Cubs again tonight after a Memorial Day win there yesterday. The Rangers won big over the Rays last night and play again tonight. It's an early start, 5:40 Central.

The NBA Finals get underway with Game One tonight in Miami; the Heat hosting the Dallas Maverics at 8 o'clock on ESPN. On a side note, American Airlines has their name on both arenas.

It's not official yet, but sources close to the situation say the Houston Rockets have hired Kevin McHale to be their new head coach. McHale starred for 15 seasons with the Boston Celtics and later served as general manager and then coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

San Angelo Police are asking your help with this week’s Most Wanted. 26 year old Jerris Lamar Reed is wanted for engaging in organized criminal and drug activity. He’s described as six foot four, 160 pounds, black hair, brown eyes. He’s been associated with addresses in the 2100 block of Wilson Street and the 3600 block of North Chadbourne and a white 2002 Buick Regal. Tips can be made anonymously at 658-HELP.

Click It or Ticket Zero Tolerance This Week


The Click It or Ticket campaign is underway. From now through June 5, local police departments and the Highway Patrol are operating under a zero tolerance policy for seat belt and child safety seat violations. Fine range up to 250 dollars, plus court costs. State law requires everyone in a vehicle be secured by a safety belt. Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent, and it’s 60 percent in pickups, because they’re more like to roll over in a crash.

75 MPH Speed Limit Just a Governor's Signature Away

The State Senate passed a measure that would allow TxDOT to set 75 mile per hour speed limits in rural areas and do away with different speed limits for day and night. The bill was the same as one that passed the House, so it’s headed to Governor Rick Perry’s desk.

Verizon Presents Check for College Funding Assistance

Verizon is trying to help local families find help to pay for college. The company gave the San Angelo P-16+ Education Partnership a check for over 35-hundred dollars to develop and print the booklet: College Resources and Where to Find them.

Blue Knights Present Check to Repair Texas Peace Officers Memorial Wall

This afternoon, members of the Blue Knights Texas Chapter in San Angelo presented a check to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. The Blue Knights is a motorcycle club that promotes motorcycle safety. They had a fundraising ride in April. And, the donation today is to help repair the Texas Peace Officers Memorial Wall on the Capital Grounds in Austin.

Information on Low Interest Housing and Business Loans Through Rural Development Office Day

Tomorrow, the Rural Development Office in Ozona is going to be open with information on various housing loan programs, community loans and grants, financial aid for businesses and other assistance. The Rural Development Direct Loan program provides financing through low interest loans. The Office is in the Council of Governments Building on West Loop 306, and the Office Day runs from two to four.

TxDOT Mowing All Week. Drivers Urged to Be Cautious.

TxDOT is urging drivers to be aware of mowers, who will be out all this week in Tom Green, Sterling and Coke Counties. Use caution when you’re passing through their work areas.

The San Angelo Colts wrap up their spring training today with a doubleheader against the Roswell Invaders of the Pecos League. The games are going on now and tickets are just three dollars each. The Colts open their regular season Wednesday night against McAllen.

Pitcher Shannon Carrico is having a great seaons for Wall softball. The Lady Hawks beat Colorado City in two out of three games over the weekend to advance to the regional finals for the first time ever. Carrico struck out 17 batters in Wall’s game one win, and was the winning pitcher in game three. The Lady Hawks will play Alpine this weekend for the right to go to the state tournament. In baseball, Miles plays Stanford and Wall plays Bushland in th playoffs.

The Mavericks try to take a commanding lead toninght in the Western Conference finals. A win against the Thunder in Oklahoma City puts them up 3-1.

The Rangers start a home series with the White Sox tonight and the Astros host the Dodgers.

Audit Shows Fabricated Expenses Reimbursed to CAC Executive Director

An audit performed for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Tom Green County board members shows improper or fabricated expense reimbursements of about 66-thousand dollars were paid to former executive director, Debra Brown. There were reimbursements for airfare, furniture, clothing and gift cards that C-A-C staff members say were not used for the Center.

Rep Drew Darby Appointed to Special Panel that Decides on Rainy Day Fund

State Representative Drew Darby is going to serve on the special panel that will decide how much the state should draw out of the Rainy Day Fund to help close the deficit in the current budget cycle.

Texas Department of Juvenile Justice Formed

Governor Rick Perry has signed a bill that abolishes the Texas Youth Commission. All of the T-Y-C programs will be merged with the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission and the two will become the state Department of Juvenile Justice. The mission is to downsize the state run youth prison system and increase community based treatment and rehabilitation programs. There will be an announcement in June about what three of the seven Youth Commission lockups will be closed.

Sonogram Requirement Measure Signed into Law by Governor Perry

The Governor has signed legislation that would require a woman to get a sonogram at least 24 hours before she can have an abortion. The measure was approved by two thirds of both houses, so it became law when Governor Perry signed it and will be enforced within 30 days.

Armed Forces Day Picnic at Lake Nasworthy Saturday

Tomorrow is Armed Forces Day. The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee will host the Goodfellow Air Force Base Appreciation Day Picnic, with games and activities, including a barbecue, for all active duty military personnel and their families. It’s from 11am to 2pm at the Goodfellow Recreation Camp on Lake Nasworthy.

The East Angelo Lions Club is having a brisket sale from 9-11am at Holy Angels Catholic Church. The Hobo Festival is from 10am to 4pm at the Railway Museum of San Angelo. The Wall softball team is in the regional semifinals for the first time and they play Colorado City tonight in Snyder in game one. It's a best of three game series.

The Wall baseball team is also in Snyder and the Hawks play Hawley in the regional quarterfinals. That's also game one of a best of three game series.

The Miles baseball team plays Fort Hancock in the regional quarterfinals in Crane tonight. Game two and game three if necessary will be in Midland tomorrow.

The Oklahoma City Thunder evened the series with the Dallas Mavericks last night, 1-1. The series continues Sunday night in Oklahoma City.

The Rangers gave up the tying run in the bottom of the 9th and the winning run in the bottom of the 10th last night and lost 2-1 to the Royals. The Rangers continue the road trip tonight in Philly, with former Ranger Cliff Lee on the mound for Philadelphia. The Astros will try to snap a five game losing streak against the Blue Jays in interleague play.

Give Feedback on TxDOT Four Year Plan Tonight

The Texas Department of Transportation will have a public meeting tonight to get local reaction to the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program. It’s a four year plan for road projects. You can find out about their plans from six to eight tonight at the TexDOT Training Center on Knickerbocker Road.

Child Seat Safety Inspection Today

Memorial Day Weekend is the start of the Click It or Ticket Program, with local police on the look out for seat belt violations, but also infant and child car seat issues. Today, Safe Kids San Angelo will inspect your child seat installations at Mitchell Buick G-M-C on Sherwood Way from four to seven o’clock. They’ll even have a limited number of car seats available.

Red Flag Warning and Severe Weather Threat This Afternoon

A Red Flag Warning is in effect until eight o’clock. The National Weather Service says fire danger is critical, this afternoon, along a line from Haskell to Abilene to San Angelo and Sonora. And, a dryline may cause some thunderstorms, which could be severe. Deadly lightning, large hail and damaging winds are the main threats.

Afternoon sports headlines

The Colts will get their final tuneup for the 2011 season Monday, May 23rd when they play a doubleheader against the Roswell Invaders of the Pecos League. Tickets are just 3 bucks and it gets started at 2:30. Between games the team will host its annual season ticket holders party, where season ticket holders will be able to meet their favorite Colts players. The Colts open the season next Wednesday against the McAllen Thunder. Opening night will feature a fireworks show and the first 1000 fans get a free t-shirt.

A couple of bad pitches doomed the Rangers last night, losing in Chicago 4-3. The White Sox tied the game on a three run homer and took the lead on a wild pitch. The Rangers are at the Royals tonight. The Astros lost to the Braves last night and are in St. Louis tonight.

The Mavericks took game one of the Western Conference Finals last night behind Dirk Nowitzki's 48 points. Game two is Thursday in Dallas.

Police Week Service on Friday

Redistricting Passes Senate

Members of the Texas Senate gave final approval to a redistricting plan and sent it to the House, last night.

New Buildings at Central High School Named

The San Angelo School District has names for new buildings at Central High School. The new administration building will be called Eva Camunez Tucker Hall, after a philanthropist and teacher. The Agriculture Science building will be Elmer Kelton Hall, after the western fiction author.

County Considering Guidelines for Welders

Tom Green County Commissioners are considering new guidelines for professional welders to help in times of a disaster declaration. For every welder, cutter, grinder or any person doing an activity that could cause a spark, a spotter would be required. The area around the work would have to be free of vegetation for a 25 foot radius and kept wet, if possible. They would need to have ten gallons of water on hand and fire extinguishers. And, welding would only be allowed, if the winds are less than 20 miles per hour.

City Council Keeps Lease with Skyline Aviation

Yesterday, San Angelo City Council Members voted to maintain the lease agreement with Skyline Aviation, a fixed base operator that fuels and maintains aircraft at the San Angelo Regional Airport.

Down to 3 Daily Flights From San Angelo

American Eagle is reducing the number of daily flights for San Angelo. Starting June 9th, there will be only three flights in and out of Mathis Field. The company is making cuts, nationwide, blaming high fuel prices.

San Angelo City Council on Garage Sales, Eskimo Hut and Bright Signage

The San Angelo City Council has voted to allow the maximum number of garage sales to three per year. Originally, they had set the max at two.
Council members approved a zoning change for land near Glen Meadows Baptist Church. It’s now a general commercial district, which allows for an Eskimo Hut to set up shop.
And, the Council was divided about a request for an electronic sign near a residential neighborhood at the intersection of Caddo and North Park Streets. The planning commission asked the council to deny a request for variance from restrictions. The Council was split, and Mayor Alvin New broke the tie, voting against the request.

Former major league pitcher Francisco Cruceta has signed with the Colts. He reached the big leagues with the Indians, Mariners and Tigers, last appearing in 2008. He was a top Rangers prospect in 2007, but never got called up to Arlington. He's struck out nearly a batter per inning at every level he's pitched and the Colts are happy to have him.

The Rangers are at the White Sox again tonight after a win there yesterday. The Rangers have won 4 of their last 5. The Astros head to St. Louis after today's matinee with the Braves.

Astros owner Drayton McLane announced Monday that he has agreed to sell the team to a group led by Houston businessman Jim Crane for 680 million dollars -- the second-highest price in major league history if it is approved.

The Mavericks host the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game One of the NBA Western Conference Finals at Dallas tonight. That will be at 8 o'clock on ESPN, right after the NBA Draft Lottery.



San Angelo School Lunches to Cost 10 Cents More in the Fall

Starting this fall, student lunches will cost ten cents more. The San Angelo school board approved the increase to allow for a rise in prices to keep the district in line with the federal guidelines in the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act. Breakfasts are still free.

State Lawmakers Send Voter ID Bill to Governor and Work on Budget

Texas House members approved a controversial voter ID bill and sent it to Governor Rick Perry. He’s likely to sign, since he made the issue a legislative priority, at the start of the session.
Senators gave final approval to a measure that would dip into the rainy day fund for about four billion dollars and close the current deficit.

CATCH Kids Marathon Wrap Up Celebration Today in San Angelo Stadium

And, all students are invited to run their final lap in the CATCH Kids’ Marathon celebration, today from five to seven o’clock. Participating Kindergarten through sixth graders have been logging a distance of 26 miles, this year, either walking or running. Today, they add .2 miles, to finish a full marathon distance, at San Angelo Stadium.

Drug Raid Busts up Local Meth Gang, 10 Arrests

San Angelo Police say they helped bust a family business of drug trafficking with an early morning raid on three residences, yesterday. 10 people were arrested, eight were indicted on federal charges. The officers found 23 grams of methamphetamine, when they rounded up the suspects in the 300 block of West Avenue Q, the 300 block of West Avenue U and the 300 block of Allen Street.

A Grass Fire Turned Smokey and Toxic, Yesterday

A grass fire caused damage to property at 47th and Armstrong Streets, yesterday afternoon. Fire officials say the danger was black, toxic smoke. The blaze began in a fenced in area with tires, scrap lumber and a fiberglass boat, about one o’clock.

Cancer Support Group for Men starts Tonight

Tonight is the first meeting for a cancer support group for men. The Cancer Warriors will have a free meeting in the Shannon Cancer Empowerment and Resource Center on North Magdalen, starting at six o’clock.

Afternoon sports headlines

The Belles fell just short of the super regionals. San Angelo State beat Midwestern State in the first game, but lost the second. They needed to win both to advance.

Neftali Feliz is 8 for 8 on the season in save opportunities, helping the Rangers perserve a 5-4 win yesterday in Arlington. The Rangers are in Chicago for a two game series with the White Sox starting tonight.

The Astros lost to the mets yesterday and travel to Atlanta to face the Braves tonight.

The Mavericks will have rested for nine days by the time they take the court against Oklahoma City tomorrow in the Western Conference finals. The first two games of the series are in Dallas.

And a pretty amazing feat in UIL track and field. Water Valley's Dylan Doss was the 1A state champ in the 1600 and 3200 meters. He didn't lose a race all season. Grape Creek's Alexis Gallimore earned second in 2A high jump.

San Angelo wants Public Input on Capital Improvements, there's a hearing tonight

The city of San Angelo wants to know what you think about Capital Improvements they’re considering for the next five years. There is a public hearing tonight at the Public Housing Authority on East 28th Street, starting at 6 o’clock. Tomorrow, there’s a meeting at the Fort Concho Officer’s Quarters on South Oakes Street at six p-m. City staff members will present the projects up for funding. They’re from transportation, land, facilities, parks, streets, water, wastewater and technology departments.

Flag Raised for National Police Week

This is National Police Week. Today, the San Angelo Police Department had a flag raising ceremony. On Friday, at its annual banquet, the Police Department named Sargeant Todd Dornhecker Police Officer of the Year. Friday, there’s an ecumenical service to honor all the officers in Texas who have lost their lives in the line of duty, this past year. The service starts at 11 am at Southland Baptist Church on Meadow Creek Trail.

San Angelo City Council to Discuss Everything from Lake Nasworthy Power Station to Goats as Pets, Tomorrow

Tomorrow, the San Angelo City Council will have a second public hearing about annexing the Lake Nasworthy Power Station southwest of the city. They will also discuss the maximum number of garage sales a property owner should be allowed to have and whether residents whould be able to keep cows, horses, goats or other hoofed animals in a pen within one hundred feed of other homes or businesses.

What's the Official Table Game of Texas?

The Texas House approved a resolution that would make the domino game 42 the official table game of Texas. The Senate will consider the measure, next.

Afternoon Sports headlines

It's official: Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan is now the controlling owner of the Texas Rangers. Major League Baseball gave its approval to Ryan on Thursday. Tonight, the Rangers start an important series with the division rival Angels at home. The Astros meanwhile, host the Mets.

Wall High School has a new head girls basketball coach. Tate Lombard, former head coach at Christoval, has been an assistant at Stephenville the last two years. Lombard will take over for Jeremy Williams, who will become Wall's Athletic Director.

The Eastern Conference finals are set - the Bulls and Heat start their series Sunday. The Mavericks await the winner of the Oklahoma City Thunder/Memphis Grizzlies series which could end tonight with a Thunder win.

And don't forget, you have the chance to make the San Angelo Colts team. Tryouts are tomorrow morning. Angelo State baseball will hold open tryouts for current or future student-athletes on June 7.

Election Day Issues Tomorrow

Tomorrow is election day. The polls will be open from 7am to 7pm. In Wall, voters will fill three school board seats. Eden residents will pick city council members. Concho County voters need to decide whether to approve a 17 million dollar bond issue to pay for a new hospital. And, there’s the question of whether to legalize beer and wine sales in Schleicher County.

Free Job Fair at McNease Convention Center Thursday

ASU Recycles Exiting Residents' Refuse

All the students moving out of residence halls at the end of the school year at Angelo State University leave behind thousands of pounds of… stuff. This year, A-S-U’s Residential Programs Office is going through the discarded clothes and other items in a massive recycling program and sending 876 pounds of donations for Goodwill Industries and the Salvation Army. The program also helps the university reduce trash disposal expenses, which are based on weight.

Armed Robbert Still on Loose, San Angelo Police Asking for Crime Stoppers Help

San Angelo police are still looking for the man who held up the Stripes Convenience Store on South Bell early Monday morning. Witnesses say he entered the store, pulled out a bag and pointed a handgun at the clerk. He ordered the clerk to empty the money from the register into the bag. He's described as a thin white male, 6 feet tall, thin, late 20's to early 30's with curly blond hair. Police think it may help you to hear his voice, and they have security video posted on the San Angelo Police Department Facebook page. San Angelo City Council Has Special Meeting Scheduled Tomorrow to Discuss the Hickory Water Supply Project

The San Angelo City Council is having a special meeting to consider a resolution that would authorize the City Manager to negotiate a financing agreement for the Hickory Water Supply Project. The city is looking for a 120 million dollar loan with the Texas Water Development Board. The meeting is tomorrow at one o’clock in the McNease Convention Center.

The Angelo State softball team found out Monday that it's heading back to the NCAA Division Two Softball National Tournament for the fifth year in a row. The Belles are seeded fourth in the South Central Region, which they've won twice in a row, and will take on fifth-seeded Emporia State Friday at Wichita Falls.

The Wall boys golf team is playing for state championship today, in the final round of the UIL State golf championships. The boys built a 13 shot lead heading into the final round.

The Rangers started the season on fire, but have dropped to third place in the division now, losing 17 of the last 26. The Rangers and A's go at it again tonight after an A's win last night. The Astros play the Reds again after Cincinnati won 6-1 last night.

Dallas Mavericks center Tyson Chandler was named Monday to the NBA All-Defense second team. The Mavs await either Oklahoma City or Memphis in the Western Conference Finals.

San Angelo ISD Trustees Consider Reducing Homestead Exemption

The San Angelo Independent School District Trustees are considering a reduction or elimination of the local optional homestead exemption. They’re still waiting to hear how much money is coming in from the state for the next school year, so they know how much of a budget shortfall they’re dealing with. It’s projected to be between three and 13 million dollars. Reducing the exemption from 20 to ten percent would generate about 774-thousand dollars and impact 21-thousand homeowners. They have until July 1st to decide.

Sanctuary City Measure Passes, Just Ahead of President Obama Visit to Texas

Texas lawmakers worked late into the night to approve a measure that would force local police to give federal immigration offenses the same priority as other crimes. President Barack Obama is in Texas today, with proposals on how to fix what he says is a broken immigration system.

State Senate Passes Two Concealed Carry Measures, One on Campus Carry

The State Senate approved two bills concerning concealed handguns. One would let licensed Texans carry concealed handguns into public college and university buildings. The other gives legislators the authority to pack pistols anywhere, even places where they’re prohibited to the general public, like bars and hospitals.

A number of local crews had asked the county how to get reimbursed for equipment and supplies, in recent weeks. And, commissioners are going to investigate how best to help them get federal funding, but until they vote on a standard procedure, the board agreed to handle requests on a case by case basis.

Farmers Market is Back on Tuesday

The Concho Valley Farmers Market opens for the first Tuesday of the season tomorrow, with vendors coming from a 75 mile radius to sell locally grown and season fruits, vegetables and plants. It’s open from seven a-m to noon under the pavilion across from Fort Concho on South Oakes Street.

Fire in Unoccupied Building in Downtown Christoval

A Red Flag Warning is in effect today, for a line west of Haskell to Abilene. Expect gusty winds, low humidity and the high temperatures mean critical fire weather conditions. Take extra care to prevent accidental wildfires.

Home foreclosures rose again, last year, in the United States. The average rate for a city is five point six percent. But, a study by foreclosure response dot org shows San Angelo has the fifth lowest rate in the country, at one point five percent.

One of San Angelo's Most Wanted is Apprehended

The San Angelo Police Department ended up nabbing two of their Most Wanted Fugitives, in a raid, yesterday. Officers and members of the U-S Marshals Service received a tip that 28 year old Tony Arroyo Junior was in a residence on North Magdalene Street. Arroyo was wanted for a probation violation for the manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. And, when they found him, they also found 35 year old Gary Dale Bilbrey Junior, who was wanted for forgery and has passed counterfeit money in San Angelo.

Afternoon sports headlines

Angelo State has the number one seed in the south division in this weekend's Lone Star Conference tournament in Durant, Oklahoma. A 40-10 season got the Belles to this point. Angelo State has won the last three tournaments.

The Eldorado girls softball team is going for another area championship with a game versus Baird tonight at Wells Field at Abilen Christian. A win would advance them to the third round of the UIL softball bracket.

Not many people thought the Dallas Mavericks would be in this position after two games in LA, but the Mavs lead the Lakers in the series two games to none after a convincing win last night. The series heads back to Texas tomorrow night.

The Rangers play the Mariners tonight after a 4-1 win last night. The Astros are playing a matinee with the Reds. The Rangers head back home tomorrow to start a series with the Yankees. The Astros continue their road trip in Pittsburgh this weekend.

Angelo Catholic School Multi Cultural Festival Friday

The Angelo Catholic School Multi Cultural Festival is from ten to 11:30 tomorrow in the Elementary Campus Gymnasium on Beauregard Avenue. Students will present their research on the cultures of different countries. They’ll dress in national costumes, sing, dance have food and receive stamps on passports, as they make their way through the festival. It’s open to the public.

Kids Learn About Tennis at Slamfest Event Friday

Tomorrow, 3rd graders from all over the Concho Valley will be taking a field trip to Bentwood Country Club for Kids Karnival. It’s part of Slamfest, designed to introduce kids to the sport of tennis, with free lessons, games and prizes.

Senate Approves Budget, Now Compromise

Texas Senate leaders have approved a two year state budget that cuts eleven billion dollars from current spending levels. Now, lawmakers from the Senate will meet with House members to find a compromise budget. They’re about eleven billion dollars apart. The House plan makes even deeper cuts in public school funding and employee health insurance. Governor Rick Perry prefers the House proposal, because it does not require the state to dip into its Rainy Day Fund.

SAPD in Aftermath of Suspect Shot to Death

San Angelo Police Chief Tim Vasquez says the officer who shot 19 year old Martin Pena is on administrative leave for three days and will speak to a department psychologist. He said the officer was pursuing Pena, early Wednesday morning. When he yelled for Pena to come out from hiding in a parked car, Pena was armed. The unidentified officer shot him, then proceeded to perform chest compressions until EMTs arrived.

Flurry of Drug Arrests in San Angelo

Even as the San Angelo Police Department was handling the case of a police officer shooting a 19 year old suspect, yesterday, officers were serving arrest warrants in a major drug sting. At least fifteen San Angelo residents were arrested, yesterday, starting about eight a-m. Most were charged with engaging in criminal activity and conspiracy to manufacture and deliver cocaine, in an amount over 400 grams.

Afternoon sports headlines

The state track and field championships are coming up May 13th and 14th in Austin and several local high schools will be represented. After regional meets finished up Tuesday, Sonora and Wall from Region 1-double-A will be sending students and, from Region Two-1A, Water Valley is sending three students.

The Rangers may get Josh Hamilton back soon. He's scheduled to start hitting off a tee tody, the first step in his recovery from a broken right arm. The Rangers lost to Seattle last night 4-3 and will play again tonight.

The Astros have another game with the Reds tonight after winning last night 10-4. That included a six run 4th inning.

Tonight is Game 2 between the Mavs and Lakers in Los Angeles. The Mavericks took game one on two late free throws by Dirk Nowitzki, winning by two. If the Mavs win tonight, it would be a commanding lead as the series heads back to Dallas.

Suspect Shot and Killed by San Angelo Police Officer

A San Angelo police officer shot and killed an armed suspect, this morning. Police Chief Tim Vasquez says the officer saw a suspicious vehicle in the 500 block of East 39th Street and tried to stop the driver, about two a-m. The suspect fled, first in the car, then on foot. The officer found him hiding in a parked vehicle, and when he ordered the suspect to come forward, Vasquez says he was armed with a handgun. The officer shot 20 year old Martin Pena. The San Angelo man was wanted for a motion to revoke probation warrant on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The officer’s name has not been released.

Wildfires Under Control Today According to Texas Forest Service

Texas Forest Service reports the Deaton Cole, Oasis, Wildcat and Scott Ranch fires are all under control today. Crews are taking care of some hot spots with the Deaton Cole.

Critical Fire Weather Conditions Return

But, today, the winds are picking up and the humidity is falling. The National Weather Service says near critical fire weather conditions are back, especially along the interstate 10 corridor and across western parts of the Concho Valley that did not receive much rainfall. Tomorrow, conditions could warrant a red flag warning, again.

US Senators Want Federal Disaster Declaration for Wildfires

Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn wrote a letter to President Barack Obama asking for federal assistance for wildfire victims. They want FEMA to issue a federal disaster declaration and make funds available for recovery.

Texas Senate Stalled Over Budget Debate

The Texas Senate is at an impasse, with less than the two thirds majority required voting to bring the budget legislation up for debate.

ASU ROTC Named Best in Country

The Angelo State University’s ROTC was named the best in the nation at the Arnold Air Society’s National Conclave in New York City. The Robert G Carr Squadron received the Maryland Cup for outstanding large squadron and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Cup for the best candidate training program. Major Cody Whittington won the Outstanding Area Advisor Award, a first for the A-S-U program.

Gas Cards Available for Cancer Patients Through Shannon Oncology Center

Shannon Medical Center has received a 21-hundred dollar grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas for that purpose to help cancer patients who have to travel long distances for treatment. They have gas cards for uninsured or underinsured patients. The Shannon Oncology Center has more information.

Afternoon sports headlines

The Mavericks have been on the receiving end of a game like the one last night, when a team comes from down 16 to win. This time the Mavs came out on top, beating the Lakers in Los Angeles 96-94 in game one of the semifinals. Game two is tomorrow night in LA before the series heads back to Texas.

At the Region 1-5A meet at Texas Tech, the Central High girls mile relay team won their first heat by over seven seconds and have a good chance in today's finals to medal and qualify for the state meet.

Grape Creek High School's Alexis Gallmore wasn't at her best in the high jump yesterday, but the 5'5" leap was good enough to earn her a spot at the state meet. She's going for a spot in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles today.

The Rangers will try to right the ship tonight in Seattle, coming off a loss last night. Houston was rained out last night in Cincinnati, and the two teams will go at it again tonight.

Health Club Basket Auction

The Community Health Club is holding a basket auction from 8 a-m to 4 p-m tomorrow. Proceeds will benefit the Road Lizards running club. You don’t have to be a member to bid.

Homes Sales Hold Steady in 1st Quarter

In the Texas Quarterly Housing Report, San Angelo’s home sales were down eleven percent, but the median price increased 19 percent, in the first quarter of 2011. Statewide, Texas homes are maintaining their value, despite a tick in sales volume.

San Angelo City Council Action, May 3

The council approved an amendment to the ordinance that bans trailers from being parked in residential districts. There is now an exception for trailers being actively loaded or unloaded. Blacktopper Technology was awarded the contract for the city’s seal coat program, for 563-thousand dollars. The city reached agreement with Gary Donaldson Architecture for work on the new livestock barn at the San Angelo Fairgrounds. And, staffing levels at the fire department were changed to providing for 33 drivers and 95 firefighters.

San Angelo Council Members Hear Litter Complaints

San Angelo City Council members discussed complaints received about the amount of trash at Lake Nasworthy and South Concho Park after Easter weekend. Police Chief Tim Vasquez says there aren’t enough trash cans. And, council members agreed that everyone who uses the parks needs to be more vigilant about littering.

Limited Outdoor Cooking Allowed in Tom Green County

Tom Green County is making an exception to the disaster declaration that prohibits outdoor burning. Today, County Commissioners heard from a number of citizens that churches planning cookouts and catering companies are being hurt. So, commissioners agreed to allow the use of propane ‘and other cooking apparatuses’ under the supervision of any volunteer fire department.
Otherwise, the burning prohibition remains in effect until there is no more wildfire danger. Fireworks are banned until May 14.

Free Performance of Anti-Bullying Play This Sunday

The San Angelo Broadway Academy Resident Touring Company will perform a free show designed to raise awareness of school violence and bullying. The play is called Bang, Bang, a drama performed by kids for kids on Sunday May 8th, starting at 6:30pm at the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre at Central High School. The Company is also taking the play to schools in San Angelo, Ozona, Miles and Grapecreek, this month.

Still Time to Help the Princess Project

The Central High School Student Council could still use gently worn prom dresses and accessories for the Princess Project. They are especially in need of larger sizes and current styles for girls who couldn’t otherwise afford to attend prom. Former President Bush Gets Thanks from Supporters

The death of Osama Bin Laden prompted supporters of former President George W Bush to leave flowers and patriotic balloons outside his Dallas home. Bush was home, last night, releasing a statement congratulating President Barack Obama and praising U-S military personnel.

Firefighters "Buttoning Up" Wildfires

The Texas Forest Service says firefighters are taking advantage of the cooler temperatures and higher humidity. They will be buttoning up problems areas at the Scott Ranch wildfire in Irion County and the Wildcat wildfire in Coke County. Growth potential is low for both blazes.

Could Be Record Breaking Freeze Tonight

The National Weather Service reports about half an inch of rain fell, in the last 24 hours. And, tonight could be a record breaker. A few low lying areas could see a very brief freeze or frost, as temperatures fall into the low to mid 30s, overnight. You’re encouraged to take measures to protect livestock and any sensitive vegetation through tomorrow. The average last freeze is March 28th. The latest freeze recorded by the National Weather Service was on April 30th of 19-08.

Afternoon Sports headlines

The Spurs are out, so Texas is represented by the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA playoffs. The Mavs meet the Lakers in the post season for the first time in 23 years. Game one is tonight in Los Angeles.

It was a big deal for the players to be drafted by NFL teams over the weekend. Usually that means the players visit their new teams and start learning the playbook. With the lockout back in effect, the teams are not allowed to have any contact with their new players.

The Angelo State softball team was crowned the Lone Star Conference South Division Regular Season Champion, despite losing two games over the weekend. The Championship tournament starts Thursday, with Angelo State taking on Cameron in Durant Oklahoma.

The Angelo State baseball team beat Cameron in the final game of the regular season but it was not enough for the Rams to make the playoffs. The Rams lost two games before that to Cameron, and for the first time in school history, ASU baseball failed to make the Lone Star Conference Tournament.

TLC Academy Mock Murders Principal

Don't be alarmed by the crime scene tape and fake blood at T-L-C Academy, today. Sixth grade students are studying all aspects of a violent crime. They're taking on the roles of crime scene investigators, police detectives, court reporters, and news reporters. Today's victim is the school's principal.

Local Students Compete at Academic Meet

Four students from Veribest High School are competing at the University Interscholastic League’s State Spring Academic Meet, this week. They’re all members of the social studies team. Javier Carmona, Lesley Oliver, Ariana Hernandez and Jaimie Oliver are at Abilene Christian University for the regional contest. Ariana Hernandez will also compete individually. Water Valley High School also has two students who advanced to the region, Rebecca Sussdorf in prose interpretation and Jennifer Lisson in spelling and vocabulary.

Wildfires Get Help from the WEather

The weather should help fire crews battling wildfires, this week. The Texas Forest Service says the Deaton Cole blaze is taking a lot of resources. It’s burned 150-thousand acres and is just five percent contained. Growth potential is still high in Val Verde, where it moved north and northeast, this weekend.
On the other hand, the Wildcat fire, near Bronte, is 98 percent contained, with light smoldering, this morning.
The Scott Ranch Wildfire is one hundred percent contained, in Irion County.

Library has Programs for Teens

Little Olympics Are Friday

The 70th Annual Little Olympics start Friday afternoon at San Angelo Stadium, with the flag ceremony and parade of schools. More than 15-hundred students in grades four through six will compete in track and field events. They’ve been training in their physical education classes for months. The competition free and open to the public.

Which Concho Valley Schools Rank Highest?

Mason High School is number one in a new ranking of public schools in the area put together by Children at Risk, a nonprofit research company in Houston. Among middle schools, Veribest, Water Valley and Wall all earn top rankings. For elementary schools, Santa Rita in San Angelo is number one. The company used things like demographics, teacher turnover and TAKS scores.

House Gutted, San Angelo Man Saves Puppies

San Angelo fire officials are investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed a house on East 21st Street, Saturday night. Jack Yell says he’d just had the electricity turned on in his house and an outdoor generator was cutting in and out. When he went outside to check on the problem, he saw flames. Yell managed to get his dogs and a new litter of puppies to safety.
