Colts lose to Alexandria on run in the bottom of the ninth

Alexandria, La. --- Catcher Doug Freeman’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Alexandria Aces a 9-8, walk-off win against the Colts Monday night at Bringhurst Field.

Freeman’s base hit scored designated hitter Austin Newell. Newell drove in the tying run earlier in the inning with an RBI single.

The Colts and Aces battled back and forth through the early innings, and were tied at seven after the fourth. Neither starter got out of the fourth inning, but strong relief pitching held both teams scoreless from the fifth through the seventh.

The Colts took an 8-7 lead in the eighth, when Freeman made two costly errors. Third baseman Steve Rinaudo reached base on the first error, and the scored on the second.

Despite the errors, Freeman redeemed himself with the game-winning, RBI single.

Alexandria reliever Nathan Stewart (1-0) earned the win, allowing an unearned run on two hits in as many innings of work. Colts’ closer Alfredo Caballero (0-1) suffered the loss, and a blown save. He surrendered a pair of runs on two hits, and went just 2/3 of an inning before Freeman’s walk-off hit.

The win improves the Aces to 5-6, while the loss drops San Angelo to 6-5. This four-game series concludes Tuesday night at Bringhurst Field. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
