Buffalo Soldiers

Fort Concho celebrates Buffalo Soldier Heritage Day this Sunday, marking the contributions of the famed black troops of the western frontier. The Plains Indians gave soldiers the nickname of “buffalo soldiers” as the troops’ matted hair reminded the warriors of their sacred buffalo. The troops eventually adopted this as a formal part of their regimental crest. The celebration takes place from 2 to 4 PM in the fort's Commissary Building. There is no charge to attend.
