Drought Depletes West Texas Cattle Herds

The extended drought has had a severe effect on the size of cattle herds in West Texas. New numbers show over 600-thousand fewer cattle on ranches in the area, a direct result of the worst drought since 1895. Some cattle industry veterans now estimate many ranches are only thirty or forty percent stocked. Many cattle were shipped out of state to graze at the height of last summer's drought, some as far away as Georgia. It's now estimated at least 150-thousand head were sent to other states where they could find grazing land.
