Dorm Residents To Be Required To Have Meningitis Vaccines

Some college students who are heading back to classes at Angelo State today and at Howard College next week will find a new requirement for attending their classes after the new year: meningitis vaccinations. The Texas Legislature has expanded a law that was already on the books to require all college students who live in dorms to be vaccinated for meningitis by January first. Bacterial meningitis, which is spread through coughing, sneezing, sharing drinks and utensils, and kissing, is rare, but the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it more commonly strikes people 17 to 21. The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends the bacterial meningitis vaccine be administered to all college students.
