Latest on Wildcat Fire and Evacuations

There are some new areas of evacuation in Coke County, due to the Wildcat fire. All of FM 2662 and 2034. The fire is in its fifth day, just ten percent contained. Firefighting units from around the state are working today, with priorities in the Poverty Canyon and Live Oak Ridge areas on the east and southeast flank. There are 40 to 50 homes in the path of the fire in rural areas of Southern Coke County. So far, about 130-thousand acres have burned.
Shelter is available in the Robert Lee Community Center on Park Road. Three bulls have been confirmed lost in the flames and smoke. Tom Green County extension agent Steve Sturtz is taking donations of hay for livestock that’s been evacuated.
Texas Forest Service has ordered more aerial resources to help, including four modular airborne firefighting systems and a DC- 10 airtanker for air reconnaissance and fire retardant drops.
Once again, fire officials ask that everyone who is not involved in the fire and emergency operations stay clear of the area, especially along Highway 277 to Bronte. Heavy smoke is reducing visibility, and crews need to do their work.
