Farmers Market celebrates Melon Fest Aug. 10

The Concho Valley Farmers Market celebrates its annual Melon Fest – featuring a bumper crop of cantaloupes and red- and yellow-meat watermelons – from 7 a.m. until noon Saturday Aug. 10 under the Farmers Market Pavilion at 609 S. Oakes St., across from Fort Concho.

Many of the vendors, who come from a 75-mile radius around San Angelo, will be offering locally grown melons for sale during the event, along with other seasonal fruits, vegetables and plants. Additionally, there will be live music and door prizes consisting of free melons and other produce.

The Farmers Market conducts sales each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from the spring through the fall. The selection includes homegrown tomatoes (which are plentiful this year), Fredericksburg peaches, okra, peppers, squash, zucchini, black-eyed peas, green beans, eggplants, corn, cucumbers, greens (including lettuce, spinach and collards), carrots, turnips, garlic, leeks, beets, shelled pecans, honey, farm-fresh eggs, indoor and outdoor plants, onions, herbs such as basil, thyme, cilantro, parsley and rosemary, baked goods and cheeses.

The farmers market typically charges customers $1 for a bundle or a bowl of produce. Cantaloupes cost $1 each, and watermelons are $4-$6.

Interested farmers can join the market for $15 or $20, which allows them to set up a stand for $5 or $10 at each sale.
