State Capital Roundup

In Austin, the House Transportation Committee heard a series of bills related to cell phone use and driving, today. During his testimony, State Representative Tom Craddick from Midland collapsed and hit his head. The Republican’s office says he’s fine, just got a little dizzy, because he’s taking pain medication for an infected tooth. His bill calls for a ban on texting while driving.
The State Senate Health and Human Services Committee approved a bill that would ban smoking in bars, restaurants and other indoor public places in Texas. That’s headed to the full Senate for a vote.
Friday is the last day lawmakers can file a bill. State Senator Robert Duncan says he plans to propose a constitutional amendment allowing a state wide property tax.
And, State Representative Drew Darby is asking for a rider on the House Appropriations Budget Bill that would close the Office of Public Insurance Counsel. The San Angelo Republican and insurance title company owner says the office is not performing its intended function and overlaps with the state Department of Insurance.
