Texas Drivery Responsibility Program in Trouble

This week, lawmakers are considering eliminating the Texas Driver Responsibility program. It requires those charged with offenses like Driving while Intoxicated and failure to have insurance to pay state surcharges. Nearly sixty percent of those with surcharges are unwilling or unable to pay, and they owe the State more than one point one billion dollars.

Right now, there's an amnesty program which would allow drivers to pay ten percent of the original amount they owed. But the Department of Public Safety says less than eight percent of people eligible have signed up, so far.
