Texas Department of Juvenile Justice Formed

Governor Rick Perry has signed a bill that abolishes the Texas Youth Commission. All of the T-Y-C programs will be merged with the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission and the two will become the state Department of Juvenile Justice. The mission is to downsize the state run youth prison system and increase community based treatment and rehabilitation programs. There will be an announcement in June about what three of the seven Youth Commission lockups will be closed.
