Weather Sirens Sounded Accidentally

Turns out the storm that blew through the Concho Valley yesterday produced more than soaking rain and half-dollar size hail -- it also caused San Angelo's weather alert sirens to go off prematurely. They're supposed to sound when the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning -- meaning a tornado has actually been sited -- or when larger hail or seventy-plus-mile-per-hour wind is recorded. None of that happened yesterday, although over an inch of rain fell and some larger hail was reported in areas including San Angelo Country Club. City emergency management officials say the warning sirens were activated because of a misunderstanding. Still, they say, they'd rather err on the side of caution when we're entering severe weather season.
