Water Rates are Going Up... And Other Results of the San Angelo City Council Meeting

After this summer, water rates are going up. The San Angelo City Council approved an ordinance that will increase the monthly base by 29 percent. Usage rates will increase by one dollar and 31 cents. That translates into an average increase of 14 dollars and 75 cents per month for a residential bill. The revenues will help pay for the annual debt service on the 120 million dollar loan the city took out for the Hickory Aquifer water supply project. The rates take effect September 1st.
City Council members agreed to sell raw water to the Quicksand Golf Course through the end of September. The 12 acre feet of water weekly is less than the course requested, but enough to allow play to continue. Mayor Alvin New says the Council will revisit the amount and the end date of the agreement later this summer.
City Manager Harold Dominguez told city council members that San Angelo is cutting back on water use. Watering has been stopped on half of the city’s park land. The city is installing a 40-thousand gallon rainwater collection barrel that will be used for landscaping in the City Hall Plaza area.
Council members made some changes to the city’s drought contingency plan, including a reduction in the amount of water that can be used before residents and businesses are charged an excess usage fee. The usage fees were raised, as well, to encourage conservation.
