Craigslist scam

The San Angelo Police Department has taken several reports of scams occurring through Craigslist. Here's an example: you receive an email offering to buy your item, or service. A cashier's check or personal check is offered for your sale item, as a deposit for real estate, or for your services. The value of the check often far exceeds your item; the scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via a money transfer service, Banks will often cash these fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, including, in some cases, criminal prosecution. One important tip from Craigslist to avoid such scams: Deal locally with folks you can meet in person.
