Tom Green County Library receives grant

SAN ANGELO – The Tom Green County Library received a $17,000 grant for a Big Read program which gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 31 selections from American and world literature. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment.

Tom Green County Library is one of only 77 grantees chosen to participate in the Big Read this year. Participating communities receive high-quality, free-of-charge educational materials to supplement each title, including Reader’s, Teacher’s, and Audio Guides, which also are available for download on neabigread.org. The book selected by a committee in San Angelo is “Into the Beautiful North” by Luis Alberto Urrea. Filled with radiant depictions of the Mexican landscape and unforgettable characters, the novel chronicles a young woman's quest to protect her hometown from banditos.

This will be a county wide program, sponsored by The Tom Green County Library and will include programs with Angelo State University, Saint Paul Presbyterian Church, SAISD and others. There will also be companion books for teens and children.

Events will be held throughout October 2013 that will relate to the book and certainly the highlight of events will be Luis Urrea’s three day visit to San Angelo. There will be free copies of the book and study guides for the public. The subject matter of “Into the Beautiful North” is very timely and people from both sides of the border will be touched by its insights, humor, and the truths that it reveals about crossing the border and venturing north. The book is expected to open up lively conversations about family, travel, immigration, strength and determination.

The kick-off event will be on Saturday, October 5 and book discussions will be hosted by local groups as well as the library. These groups can receive copies of the book and reading guides to help them in their discussions. If anyone is interested in hosting a book discussion they should contact Wanda Green or Marcy Bosequett at 325-655-7321.
