Angelo State professor authors study on cultural identity

An Angelo State professor has authored a study showing African-American students at primarily white universities fear losing their cultural identity.

Jake Simmons says data reveals major challenges as black students feel tension between integrating into what he calls the dominant culture while honoring their own culture.

The study has published over the Internet in the National Communication Association's journal Communication Education.

Simmons and his colleague report that some of the 67 black students surveyed at three major universities said they felt they could not survive in the white world without altering their language or culture. He says the students found this change undesirable.

Surveyed students also reported feeling different from their white peers in thought, language, dress, classroom behavior and socializing. Simmons says this suggests that these black students “see themselves as cultural visitors.”
