Several area counties were recently recognized by the Texas Historical Commission with the 2011 Distinguished Service Award. Runnels, Mason, Menard and Tom Green were part of a group of 78 counties to be honored with the award that highlights County Historical Commissions that work toward significant preservation efforts and bring new understanding about state and local history. The historical commissions are made up of unpaid county appointees who volunteer countless hours every year preserving documents, artifacts, and buildings.
