New Year's Eve crashes

A San Angelo police officer on patrol late New Year's Eve near the 2200 block of South Chadbourne observed debris in the roadway, then a broken lightpole and, finally, a Nissan 350 Z in the ravine, east of Chadbourne. Two men inside were unresponsive and taken to Shannon Medical Center. The passenger, a 21-year-old Airman assigned to Goodfellow Air Force, later died. His name was not immediately released. The driver, 25-year-old Daniel Munoz of San Angelo, remained hospitalized with serious injuries. Investigators say the car was speeding northbound on South Chadboune before losing control, hitting the lightpole and flipping and rolling into the ravine.

As that crash was being investigated, a Dodge Ram pickup speeding northbound on South Chadbourne ran into an unoccupied patrol car that was being used to block traffic. 26-year-old William Carter of San Angelo was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries. Alcohol was listed as a possible factor in both crashes.
