Base Closures Off Table - For Now

Military bases in the U-S have dodged the bullet again, at least for now. The Defense Department says closure of military bases is off the table, at least for 2013. Many cutbacks and some outright closures had been proposed as a way of trimming the defense budget. Some of those changes could have affected a number of Texas bases including Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo. Now, though, they've all received at least a temporary reprieve. Many in Congress are lobbying hard to keep the so-called Base Realignment and Closure Commissions out of budget plans for as long as possible as a boost to their local economies. Even though a Commission won't be sitting for 2013 a Defense Department budget proposal submitted earlier this year still calls for another one in 2015.
