A dramatic new twist in the slaying of Regan County deputy sheriff Josh Mitchell last week: the only suspect in the shooting has died. Marcus Madison of Big Lake was hospitalized after his arrest following a SWAT team standoff last week. He was accused of gunning Mitchell down outside a house in Big Lake then hiding in the house. Madison reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the head that may have been self-inflicted. Reports today say the wound was very severe and that it was surprising Madison lived as long as he did. Meanwhile, a funeral procession from San Angelo to Big Lake this morning brought the body of Deputy Mitchell back for funeral services. Police agencies from throughout the state took past in the cortège. Burial took place in Big Lake with an honors ceremony following the service.
