Base Closures Off Table - For Now

Military bases in the U-S have dodged the bullet again, at least for now. The Defense Department says closure of military bases is off the table, at least for 2013. Many cutbacks and some outright closures had been proposed as a way of trimming the defense budget. Some of those changes could have affected a number of Texas bases including Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo. Now, though, they've all received at least a temporary reprieve. Many in Congress are lobbying hard to keep the so-called Base Realignment and Closure Commissions out of budget plans for as long as possible as a boost to their local economies. Even though a Commission won't be sitting for 2013 a Defense Department budget proposal submitted earlier this year still calls for another one in 2015.

More Wells Recommended

With San Angelo's water supply good for only a little over a year unless major rainfall occurs, the city is hustling to find additional sources of water. A water advisory and burn ban are already in place. Now, the city's Water Advisory Board is recommending that seven new wells be drilled in the Hickory Aquifer water field. Board members say the move is based on worst-case scenarios and would not involve pumping the maximum daily amount of water possible, just enough to get San Angelo through the drought and leave a reserve. The project could cost up to eighteen million dollars. Most of the money is already available in leftover funds from the Hickory Aquifer project.

Water Pumped From Twin Buttes

Workers today started pumping water out of Twin Buttes Reservoir in an effort to sustain San Angelo's dwindling water supply. Officials say it's critical to pump water into Lake Nasworthy now because demand in these hot summer days exceeds what's available from O-H Ivey Reservoir. San Angelo is battling an ongoing water shortage which currently has the city in Stage Two of its drought plan with a maximum of sixteen months' water supply available. City officials say pumping water from Twin Buttes to Nasworthy is only a short-term solution to the water shortage. Only one thing, they say, will provide a real fix: rain and lots of it.
